On That College Spot

Ross and Rachel had Central Perk, Harry and Ron had Hagrid's house and I have Taco Pier.

Taco Pier is my "college spot," a haven far enough away from campus to be a haven, but just close enough to trigger nostalgia when people at home ask about school. Sure, I love campus more than I can say, but there is such a special something about having a place all my own.

Found on accident and named after an excursion involving sunrise, breakfast tacos and some of my dearest friends, Taco Pier is as quirky as it is peaceful. A 25-minute drive past highways, rivers, farms and an airport will get you there: a humble boat ramp on the glassy edge of Lake Waco. It really isn't much. Taco Pier looks more like it's bordering a swamp than a lake. What I've found is that humble places are a lot like humble people; their beauty isn't out there for everybody to see. It takes a little digging.

Digging in our case meant time spent at Taco Pier, and a lot of it. Taco Pier has become (in less than a semester) the home of bonfires, sunsets, escapes, dares, heart to hearts, prayers and community. We are given places like this as gifts, promises that there will be both rest and adventure when we need them most.

I'm so grateful for my college spot, and I encourage everybody to go searching for a Taco Pier all their own. You'll be surprised with what you find.
