Only a few people have gone through the struggle of transferring colleges for one reason or another. Somehow, when you were selecting which school to go to, you got caught up in all the college buzz and picked the wrong one. Now, the transfer process is no walk in the park, no matter what the college admissions office tells you; but if you're unhappy with the school it's obviously worth the extra time and effort you put into it.
1. Watching your friends' experiences through social media
Realizing you picked the wrong college is hard enough, but the serious FOMO you get from watching your friends from home make new friends and having the time of there lives makes it much worse.
2. Applying to college for the second time
As if the common app wasn't hard enough to figure out the first time around when you had the help of guidance counselors and teachers; but now you're all on your own trying to figure out how to complete the application. Applying to schools is no fun.
Not only does the applying process suck; you have to worry about writing another, completely different essay, filling out all the information, making sure you meet the deadline, but then you have to go through that period again of believing you're not going to get accepted and you're college career will be over before it even started.
3. Moving in and out and in and out
Once you've finally been accepted (yay) to your new school, you now have to worry about lugging all your stuff home and moving out AND THEN moving back in after break AGAIN. Move-in day experiences are never good; but having two in one school-year (and two move-out days) is just simply a recipe for disaster, not to mention exhausting.
4. Trying to figure out campus and how to get around
Transfer students are sort of just thrown into the mix of things when it comes to being shown around. When you get your class schedule and try to map them out, it's like you're in a different country; you finally had just figured out your previous university's secret passage ways to class and what not, but now you gotta take 15 minutes to get to a class that starts in 5 because you have no idea where you are at any given time. You'll be talking to yourself holding up the map on your phone thinking "Why does this say Science Lab Building when the map clearly says i'm at the library???"
5. Making new friends...again
Mostly reasons for transferring are because you didn't feel at home at the previous school, which could have a lot to do with the people that go there, but you try to make friends and make the best of it until you realize it's not for you. Transferring makes it a little harder to make new friends because when you get there people have already become a close-knit group with living arrangements and all that, making it seem pretty impossible to find your "people"; when all you want is that lovey-dovey roommate bond with some close friends that you can adult with.
5. Trying to get involved on campus
Everyone boasts about how important it is to be involved on campus and join as many clubs/teams/organizations as your schedule can handle. A lot of these things start early on, and for a second-semester transfer it can be very hard to figure out when these things meet or how they work. You'll have your friends saying "Why weren't you at the meeting last night I thought you wanted to try it out?" when you were never put on the mailing list and no one told you there was a meeting.
6. Having to explain to everyone when you get home that you transferred
Once summer break is finally here, everyone always has to do that courteous "How was insert school name do you like it?" conversation with all their friends and family before getting back to normal interaction. Transfers get the worst of this conversation because you then have to correct the person on which school you now attend, making it a bit awkward (now you both know they don't try to keep up with you on social media), and then having to explain why you switched when there isn't really one easy answer for that.
Overall, transferring is a great thing to do if you are unhappy with your choice of school and it will be totally worth it all in the end.
