How to Get the Most out of your College Experience
As a current college student, I can easily relate to other college students going through the many stages of college life. However, by following the five steps listed below, students can get the most out of their experience regardless of which College or University they choose to attend.
1. Don’t miss out because of money
I know I was definitely guilty of this my first two years of college. As a current Junior, I am just barely starting to grip the idea of not letting money become a barrier between me and experience. I often declined going to dinner, concerts and any other money related social events with friends, simply to avoid spending money. While it is important to establish a difference between spending money and going crazy, it is also important not to let it deter you from friendships. Friendships are a crucial part of the college experience, and it is important not to lose them.
2. Know that experience comes from more than going out
At the beginning of every school year, I most often hear students, especially new students, feeling as if they cannot have fun unless they go out and party. While, yes, students do party, it is not the only way to have a fun experience in college. Going to dinner with friends, watching a movie, or simply just being in the same room with your friends can be just as exciting as going out. Spending time with friends, without going out, can open up your mind to many experiences.
3. Remember that you are strong, and you will get through it
Every student fears the idea of failing a test, or even a class. Just remember: failing a test, is NOT going to determine your success in college. Every student could admit that they have not received a test grade that they wanted, but through determination they made it through. It is important to remind yourself that it is just a test. You will persevere, just give it some time.
4. Keep an open mind
It can be hard to stray from the normal routines that we follow every single day. However, being spontaneous and being open to new experiences can enrich the college experience even more. Take the chance and go skydiving with your friends, or for those less adrenaline excited (just like me) try something new, that involves staying on the ground.
5. HAVE FUN
Though you have heard this a million times by now, it is true. Have fun and enjoy your experience. No matter how you choose to have fun, DO IT. After all, you’re only in college for a little while. Keep in mind, that this is a prime time in your life, and these experiences will remain in your memory forever, so make some good ones.
These five steps may seem challenging at first, but overtime they can be a huge factor to success in college. Everyone has one goal at the end of their four years, and that is to graduate. Do not forget to enjoy yourself by finding your way to that degree.
