An Open Letter To The Class I Had A 68 In At Midterms... but, I Ended Up With An A In Before The Final

We all have that one class we take that everyone says is hard, but we are going to be the one person in the history of the class to be passing at midterms. For me, this class was Macroeconomics. Since my sister is a few years older than me I had heard about how hard this class could be before I came to college. I still thought I would manage a B without any effort.

I was wrong.

The first day of the semester I get to class, find a left-handed desk (in the first row), and get ready for the lecture. My Professor entered the room early and pulls up a powerpoint. I think to myself "Perfect, powerpoint notes. This should be easy".

I was wrong, again.

By the next week, we had our first quiz. I "studied" and promptly failed it. The week after that, we had another quiz, and I, once again, failed it. At this point, I started to realize: this could be hard. We had 3 more quizzes before our first test. I got D's on the following 3 quizzes and somehow managed to get a 76 on the first test.

I was so confused.

I was honestly baffled by the fact I was doing awful and managed a 76 on the test. I ended up going into my professor's office hours, and asked him "How can I fail all your quizzes and still pass the test?" While at his office hours we talked about strategies to use to help me increase my grade in the class.

They worked.

After the midterm break, my professor ended up restrategizing how he taught the class. He slowed down and focused less on the notes and more on the concepts. My grades on the quizzes slowly started to increase, which meant my overall grade was also increasing. By Thanksgiving break, I, with the help of extra credit, managed to get my 68 up to a 90!

Yeah, a 90%!

This shows you that even when you think you are going to fail a class, professors will work with you to help you. They do not want you to fail. (Failing students doesn't reflect well on them either). I would never recommend my professor to anyone, but I survived the class, and you can too!

This class was hard for me.

I am glad I am not an economics major.

But, I survived and you can too.

It just takes a little more effort.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
