As everyone knows, Christmas is rapidly approaching and people are scrambling to get gifts for all their loved ones. For the first time in pretty much ever, I have no idea what to ask for this year. So I started brainstorming: there are some things that would make my life specifically easier, with my PKU diet. So here's a list of some good Christmas gift ideas for people with PKU.
*Total disclaimer, these are just things I think would be good for people following the PKU diet -- some of you probably won't find all of these ideas useful but they're just my ideas, considering my own personal diet.
1. Case of Wise Onion Rings
I lived off these things as a kid, and I still could binge eat them like no tomorrow asan adult. Cambrooke foods, a provider of special PKU goodies, sells a case of 72 snack sized bags. That should keep your friend with PKU good for at least a month and a half. Make sure you get the WISE onion rings though -- Funyuns are not allowed on our diet!
2. Pretty tumbler to drink formula out of
Recently, I have been taking my formula on the go more often then not. I take some with me to work, to early morning classes, in the car. Tumblers are the perfect thing to do this: pretty, durable plastic, has a lid so none of my formula spills and also has a straw which is good for me in particularly, because I cannot stand how my formula smells and I need a straw at all times while dealing with formula. A pretty one like this is perfect for what I need it for.
3. A hot/cold Bento Box
A bento box is a lunch box of sorts made of many little compartments, so you can fill each one with smaller snacks to make one bigger meal. This is perfect for a person on a PKU diet because, more often then not, our lunches are smaller things put together: carrot sticks, bell pepper slices, some olives and a handful of gluten free pretzel sticks. Maybe if we're feeling indulgent, a bag of those tasty Wise Onion Rings. This bento box even has temperate controlled zones, so they will keep hot things hot and cold things cold, all in the same box.
4. Greens stripper
99.9% of my meals are made of some kind of greens -- kale, lettuce, spinach, broccoli rabe -- I could go on. This device right here makes it super easy to strip the greens right off the woody, hard and not very appetizing steams. It would just leave you the leafy greens for salads, or stir fries. Honestly, it would cut my cooking time in half for dinner. (Hint hint family)
5. French Fry phone case
If you asked me what my favorite cheat food is, it's french fries, without a shadow of a doubt. Since I can't eat them all the time, due to my diet and the fact that I don't want to be completely unhealthy, at the very least I can show my love through accessories, like this phone case. It's both cute and protective.
