The Christmas Break Catch Up: What's Said vs. What's Thought

Bowling for Soup was right: high school never ends.

The Christmas Break Catch Up: What's Said vs. What's Thought

Welcome back home everybody! If you thought Thanksgiving Break was too much time at home, prepare yourself for a full month of getting in the way of your family’s daily routines.

You thought you did a pretty solid job of avoiding everybody you did not want to see, didn't you? Well, being home for this long, it’s inevitable. It’s come time to run into the kid who lives vicariously through his glory days in high school, the senior class president who’s accomplishments are now meaningless, the burnout who’s surpassed expectations by remaining in school thus far, that one who didn’t get her top choice yet still attends an ivy, the theatre geek who’s realizing Broadway is not the same as the school plays, and all the rest in between.

Let the unwanted, attempted to be avoided, feigned interest, small talk commence.

“Oh my gosh! Hi! How are you? It's been so long! How have you been?!”

It has been a long time, and probably would have gone on even longer if we hadn't both picked our heads up at the same time from our phones to see if the other one was looking, so now we have to make small talk.

“I’m great! How are you? How were finals?”

Actually, I know exactly how you're doing. I know I’m doing so much better than you because I’ve thoroughly looked through your Facebook, and I seem like I’m having more fun than you do.

“School’s amazing! Finals went well, just waiting on the grades. Good to be home though. So relaxing.”

I slept a total of 4 hours during finals week, it was miserable. I’m bored out of my mind. This is the first time I’ve left my house all day

.

“Definitely. What have you been up to? Have you seen anybody yet?”

Who got fat? Who failed out? Did the high school sweethearts finally break up?

“Yeah, [kid who’s house everybody always drank at] had people over the other night. It was fun, good to see and catch up with everyone.”

It most certainly was not. I had the same conversation 20 times with everybody. Just like the conversation we’re having right now…

“Oh, that sounds nice.”

No it doesn't. Why did I ask? I literally couldn’t care less. This is awkward because I wasn’t there, nor did I even know about it until now.

“Yeah…”

So, like, can I go now, or...

“Well, I have to go, but it was great catching up!”

Netflix awaits.

“So nice! Text me and we’ll get lunch or something!”

I don’t even have his/her number.

“For sure!”

I don’t even have his/her number.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
