September: the month when fall begins and school starts up again. However, this is not all that happens in September. It's also Childhood Cancer Month. Sadly, some children won't be going back to their schools this month because instead they will be getting treated for and recovering from cancer, the #1 leading cause of death for children under the age of 15 .
According to The Alex's Lemonade Foundation, more than 250,000 cases of cancer affect children who are younger than 20 each year. That's a whole lot of children! Another shocking statistic is that 250 kids die every day from cancer, which makes 91,250 kids each year. Imagine 91,250 families losing their child to this disease every year or 91,250 kids losing their best friends. It's a heartbreaking statistic. And worst of all, two-thirds of children with cancer will have chronic conditions for the rest of their lives. To say that cancer is one of the most devastating diseases is an understatement.
So how can you help you might ask? Well, there are plenty of organizations that you can choose from. One is Ronald McDonald House Charities, which helps families that have children with cancer by providing them with a home to live in, rather than a hotel, when the cost of treating cancer gets to be too much. There is also Saint Jude's Children Research Hospital which covers the costs of treatment, travel, housing and food so that families can just worry about their child. Yet another hospital you could donate to is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center which specializes in childhood cancer research.
Take this month to learn more about childhood cancer and maybe even support an organization that touches you. If you know a child who has cancer, try to pay them a visit, too. Educate yourself more on childhood cancer and support the cause!
