This weekend, the NFL draft came to Philadelphia, as hopeful teams were working overtime in order to gain new hopeful additions to a professional football team. One of these teams is the Chicago Bears, which used to be one of the biggest powerhouse teams in the country. But that was in the 1980s, and now they are rebuilding with the coach currently on the hot seat and with one of their most talented wide receivers going to Philadelphia (and as a Philadelphia Eagles fan, I just want to thank the Chicago Bears management for letting him go). So what are they going to do with the number 3 pick in the draft?
They could've waited out and gain talented defensive back Solomon Thomas out of Stanford, or even Mitch Trubisky without giving up anything. Instead, the Chicago Bears made one of the most boneheaded draft moves in recent memory.
The Bears decided to trade with the San Francisco 49ers for the number 2 draft pick, which is only one spot from where they were. The Bears in return gave the 49ers their No. 3 overall pick, 2017 third- and fourth-round picks, and a 2018 third-round pick to move up to No. 2. And this was all for quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who only had 13 career starts for the North Carolina Tar Heels. And this was after the Bears gave newly-acquired quarterback Mike Glennon a three-year, $45 million contract.
To say the Bears made a stupid move is an understatement. Mitch Trubisky seems like an average quarterback at best, and they already have a quarterback with guaranteed money for three years. We'll see what happens when the season starts, but this was clearly the worst draft move of the first round.
