15 Things To Be Grateful For When You Have A Bad Day

Everyone has those days or weeks where life seems to be extra stressful or overwhelming, seemingly for no reason. When you're down and feel like not much is going right, here are fifteen things that may cheer you up, and bring a little sunshine to a gloomy day.

1. Good music.

Whether your jam is more Kendrick Lamar or Luke Bryan, listening to a good song by your favorite artist, or just a beautiful song in general, can make a world's of difference in your mood. So the next time you feel stressed, out on Ed Sheeran's "Bibia Be Ye Ye" and sing your heart out; you'll be happier in no time!

2. The innocence and pure joy of children.

The kind of frank honesty and simple joy that young children have is unparalleled, and can cheer up even the gloomiest of days. Bonus points if the kid is especially cute!

3. A funny TV show.

Sometimes all it takes to calm you down or get you to relax is some silly, mindless tv. From "The Office" to "Keeping Up With the Kardashians", anybody can find something to pass time and zone out in a relaxing and happy way.

4. Good friends.

When you find those soul friends that build you up and love you no matter what, you feel a million times happier. These aren't the friends that will put you down and make you feel less than, they're the ones that will be there for you in your most wonderful days and most trying times. Sometimes talking out your problems with a trusted friend is the best remedy.

5. Sweet ice cream.

The sweet simplicity of ice cream on a warm day (or whatever your treat of choice may be if dairy isn't an option) can invoke childhood memories, and a sense of nostalgia. Treat yourself and get that strawberry scoop on a cone; you may just be reminded of your favorite trip to the beach when you were young. Memories like this can help us get through times when we feel like nothing is going right.

6. Animals.

Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, hamsters, whatever. Whether you've got a favorite, appreciate all, or just admire cute pictures, seeing or cuddling with an animal bring great joy.

7. Flowers.

Fresh blooms can provide beauty in unexpected places. You can find something marvelous anywhere if you know to look. Dandelions and wildflowers springing up from cracks in the sidewalk are just as beautiful as fresh bouquets or neatly manicured gardens.

8. The outdoors.

Some people don't really enjoy the outdoors, but I find it to be very therapeutic to just stroll mindlessly on trails, or to look up at the sky on a sunny day and admire the shapes of the clouds. Listening to birds chirping, watching leaves change or snow fall, there is something beautiful about every season. Take some time to disconnect from your social media and devices, and submerse yourself in the pure wonders of nature. The time out could be just what you need to recharge.

9. Kindness.

This is my favorite thing in the world. Witnessing, giving, or receiving, genuine kindness without anything in return is pure and wonderful, and restores faith in humanity. To see selfless and kind acts unmotivated by greed can be infrequent these days, but so wonderful when it occurs. So spread kindness and love- maybe some will come back to you when you're having a rough day.

10. The feeling of success.

When you feel down about yourself, accomplishing a goal, performing well on a test, or excelling at something can be a boost in confidence and self view. Everything counts! So you got an A on a test, but it wasn't that hard. Who cares? It's still an A, and still something to be proud of. Had an interview and fumbled in the beginning, but had a stellar ending? Focus on that ending! Leaving with a great impression is more important than the minor stumble in the beginning.

11. Your favorite outfit or article of clothing.

Find something that makes you feel confident, and comfortable. Whether it's a pair of really cool shoes, or your favorite sweater, or a necklace from your mom, everyone has that one thing that they cherish. Find yours and rock it- it could be the silver lining to a mediocre day!

12. A home cooked meal.

I love mashed potatoes. When I eat mashed potatoes, even in the dining hall, I am reminded of Christmas at my grandparent's house, gathered around the table with all my family. That feeling of nostalgia and love is indescribable.

13. Catching up with an old friend.

Seeing an old pal that you haven't in a while provides a chance to be distracted from your problems, and to take time to check in with a loved one. Listen to their recent adventures and share yours.

14. A good book.

This is like escaping into an alternate reality. Take solace in a good story when your's seems confusing or challenging.

15. Sunsets.

The serenity and beauty that emanates from a sunset is priceless, and a truly wonderful work of art.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
