I fully believe writers are their own breed of people. Writers share some qualities- here's a list of characteristics of writers I have compiled.
1. It becomes a definitive part of who you are.
When people ask you to share a fact about yourself, it's likely your first reaction will be to tell them you're a writer.
2. The best ideas will come to you at 2 A.M.
There have probably been a million times you've been lying in bed, on the verge of unconsciousness, and have an idea of something to write. It's an amazing idea but leaving a nice, warm bed to get a pencil and paper? No thank you.
3. You'll wear your heart on your sleeve.
Everyone will know how you're feeling the majority of the time. You write about it and you outwardly show it, it's hard to hide your feelings as a writer.
4. You're emotional.
As a writer, you have the ability to describe feelings when others have no idea how to put them into words. Because of this, you likely feel things deeply which can be hard but it does give you great, relatable material.
5. Sometimes you find motivation from people in your life and have public forums for which you write.
Sometimes you post things and just hope the person who inspired it doesn't see it or is clueless to the fact it's about them- or you post it waiting for them to see it.
6. No topic is off limits.
You never know whether or not a trial you're enduring could resonate with someone else. By sharing your own emotions during a situation, you could relate to someone who felt totally alone.
7. Sometimes you have to share parts of yourself you might be afraid to.
Writing is probably your coping mechanism and it's one of the only hobbies that you can't really separate from the rest of your life.
8. Because it's something you enjoy, you load up on extracurriculars that involve writing and have to come with a variety of ideas each week.
You wouldn't change it for the world but when writing goes from being something you do on your own time to something you're doing for multiple outlets, things change and it can be hard to scrape together ideas for weekly deadlines. Don't forget you're writing for classes too. You're basically a lean, mean writing machine!
9. Your biggest critic is yourself.
It can be hard to look at your material and actually like what you're seeing. You will find mistakes forever, it's never going to be perfect or convey everything you want it to.
