It's OK To Think About A Career Change Before You Graduate And Commit To One

You definitely don't need to have your entire life together before graduation.

Here are some questions for you, readers: What are you currently majoring in? What is your dream job, if you have any at the moment? And finally, do you see yourself working in your major? Is your dream job specifically in that field?

You can see how these questions can easily intersect with each other. Figuring out what you want to do after you finish college is one of the trickiest things we have to deal with as college students. In fact, I'm still dealing with it as a senior.

When it comes to having a set major, my academic college career has been through some ups and downs, but I feel that I've finally settled down into an ideal path of study. I am currently majoring in advertising-public relations (or Ad-PR as we like to call it). In the very beginning when I first came to this school, I was pretty much dead-set on staying in this major and getting an amazing job in this field. But now...

I'm not sure.

I've been dealing with this frustration and indecisiveness for a while now. While I've thought it would be really cool to work in an ad agency or PR firm as a creative person (copywriter, mostly), I don't know if I would consider it my dream job. I used to hear people within my major say that their dream jobs were among working as a public relations practitioner of a major company, or even celebrities. I've heard others say that their dream job is working in a big-time advertising agency like Ogilvy & Mather.

You would think that I'd say my dream job was along those same lines. But to tell you the truth, I couldn't really relate that much to others in my major about this because I've realized that maybe my dream job just doesn't lie in this industry. Maybe public relations or advertising isn't what I would absolutely love to do for the rest of my life.

And that's OK.

They always say that you don't have to have your entire life mapped out by your 20s, and they are absolutely right. It's OK if you feel like you don't see yourself working in your major's field. It's OK to have a career change before your career even begins.

The great thing about college (and grad school) is that you have options. If you realized that you don't want to really work in your field anymore that you are majoring in, that's perfectly fine! If you want to do grad school, take a look at all the programs your ideal school has to offer. You can even get a certificate in something and not only add it to your resume to show off, but it can also aid you in your future career change(s).

I'm just saying, the major(s) you graduate college with is not the be-all and end-all. At the end of the day, the world is truly your oyster.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
