Are you excited for your freshman year? Do you know your roommate? What is your major? Are you all packed? After a summer full of these questions, the day has finally come; your freshman move in day. Along with all of the questions you are piled with by other people, you have a brain that is scattered with a lot of your own questions. Freshman move in day can be one of the most nerve racking days of your life. It is full of anxiety, tension, and a ton of chaos. Here are some of the many thoughts that may flow through your head on your freshman move in day.
Why do I have so much stuff that I can't even sit in my car without sitting on top of a box?
On top of you thinking that you needed to bring your entire closet for your freshman year at college, you start to think whether it will even fit in the car. Personally, with the amount of stuff I had, I probably could of benefited from a UHAUL truck. All in all, moving from your nice big bedroom to a tiny room with two twin beds and two desks may be a huge adjustment that many of us don't completely understand.
Which dorm is even mine? How do I use this swipe card key that may or may not have the ugliest picture of me on it?
Well freshies, to walk into your dorm is nothing like walking into your house. You have to swipe your ID which if you're like me, may take a couple of times to figure out which way you swipe the card. (It really is extremely nerve racking when people are waiting for you to unlock the main door and you can't figure out how to use your swipe card.
Where does all of this stuff even go?
Until you walk into your dorm room, you don't realize that the amount of stuff you brought doesn't match the amount of room that you have. You don't have unlimited clothing space or unlimited desk space. The thought of unpacking taking two hours now turns into a day of unpacking and organizing. So be prepared because there will be many times where you just wonder how you're going to live in this new shoe box dorm of yours.
When is my roommate going to come? And yes girls, you're going to wonder if you can walk around the dorm with no pants on like you did at home.
If you are meeting your roommate for the first time you are going to keep planning out what you're going to say first to her. Do you hug her? What is it like living with another person in a small shoe box? Is she going to be as clean and organized as you or is she going to yell at you for being to dirty?
"Do not cry, you are strong." "Mom, please don't cry or I will cry."
If you are anything like me, I slept with my mom the whole week before I went off to school. (Yes she is my best friend, I know some of you will understand this) And yes, every night before move in day I told myself I didn't want to go to college and that in fact, I wasn't going. Move in day is a mix of happy and sad emotions. You're so excited to be independent and meet new friends but leaving your family is a thought no one wants to process. You soon realize how much you're going to miss them and then you wonder, am I doing everything on my own now? And then it hits you, yes this is all happening. But don't worry, after the water works are done and your parents leave, you are constantly surrounded by people and are soon adjusted to the feeling of being alone. Think of it as a positive experience, you become more independent. Just remember, after all of these thoughts, you will live, and you you will be fine. You will have the best freshman year ever. Positivity comes a long way.
