The Brick
We all remember it, the day we got our first cell phone. Mine looked nothing like my current iPhone 6. It looked like a brick, quite frankly, no flip, no touch screen, nothing. It had these really neat front covers you could change, kind of like clip-ons. I of course chose to clip a red and white Hawaiian flower front cover to my phone. My parents told me it was the "family phone," NOT my own phone. Sure, whatever. It was my phone as far as I was concerned. There were no games on this phone. It was just a simple call in, call out kind of thing. Borrrrrrrring.
The Weird In-Between Phone
I think there was this stage between bricks and more advanced phones that we got stuck in for a little while. Mine was a really tiny silver phone. It did flip, so that was pretty awesome for me. I was most excited about the tiny mirror on the front of the phone; it was like nothing I had ever seen before! I could also now send text messages on this phone... Now this was exciting. It also allowed me to call a boy in sixth grade after school whom I had never spoken to in person. I asked him to be my boyfriend. He said no. I figured it must have been the phone; the phone was bad luck.
The Razr (RAZR, if we're being correct)
Everyone had it. Motorola thought they had struck gold. I had a pink one, and suddenly I could have a picture on my background... WHAT?! Getting my first pink Razr was one of the most exciting days of my lives. It's the little things in life, you know? I was texting more than ever. Still in the "hit the same button three times to get certain letters" texting era, though. I don't know if you remember, but Razrs also had the world's coolest ringtone on them. It was called "MOTO" and it sounded like a robot. Default that ish.
The Slide Up Sideways Phone
It's not that they could do anything differently than the razor, but it's that they just kind of became the thing. Suddenly you could either have the phone closed and have a regular phone screen to text on OR turn it and flip it up sideways and have a full keyboard... oh you fancy huh? This phone didn't entertain us for very long because soon enough the newest thing was out.
iPhones/Blackberries/Android
While I have tried all of the above, I have ended up with an iPhone. From the brick to where we are now, it is unbelievable to think how much cell phones have changed. We can FaceTime, send emojis, search the Internet, download numerous apps, take funny videos and send them to someone across the globe, talk to our phones and have them respond to us... The list goes on and on. Unfortunately, people have now gotten accustomed to getting the newest phone out just because it's new. I definitely grew up like that. I got tired of a perfectly good phone the second a new one was out. Go back and remember how excited you were to even get your first brick! What a miracle to be able to call someone from the car when they are somewhere else. And again when I got my hot pink Razr, it was like my birthday times 7,000. I don't get that excited about phones anymore. I miss getting that excited about the little things. I can't tell you what kind of phones we will be using, if any, 30 years down the road. But I can say that I hope we appreciate it, and I hope we get really, really excited about it.
