This is especially for college students who are living by themselves or going to school out of state and are living in an apartment or a house with friends or loved ones. We all understand the erratic lives of college students -- where we try and have a set schedule but hardly anything goes according to plan, especially during holidays and the weekend. Now, if you are living in the dorms, chances are that your university does not allow animals at all, so it is best to get an apartment or house nearby.
1. As long as you keep their food and water bowl full, cats appreciate you.
Sometimes as college students, we forget to feed ourselves. We often skip breakfast, especially if we have an early morning class like at 7:30 or 8:30 and sometimes even 9:30 a.m. Also, if you do not have the cats' food and water bowls full, then as soon as you wake up you hear the blissful meows until you do.
2. Cats do not need constant attention like your ex did -- they are perfectly fine on their own at times.
Do not worry, cats will let you know when they want attention. Also, when they do not want attention. So you can go about your day, start your homework at home, and when it is time, your cat will come up and tell you they want you to scratch them.
3. Cats can get inside pretty much anything since they like exploring.
Lose something under the couch, or need to find some spare change? Your cat is always up to the task to explore new places in the house whether you like it or not. They often are the culprits of hiding things that they like in their special hiding spot. So the lip balm that you were looking for? It is now under the couch, along with your keys.
4. Cats sleep 12-14 hours a day.
This one goes out to all of the college students. Chances are that you barely get 4-6 hours of sleep a night, especially when it comes time for finals, midterms, test days, and so on. Seeing a cat or kitten yawning will make you sleepy and you'll get some much-needed rest, so when you do wake up, your mind will be fresh and you can actually study.
5. It is a great stress reliever to scratch/massage your cat when they need it.
As I mentioned before, cats have their own code that they stick by. They will let you know when it is time for you to pet them. They will unexpectedly jump next to you or on your lap when you are watching TV and will start purring and meowing in the most adorable way possible. Once you start petting them and they start purring, that's when you know your cat loves you and appreciates everything that you do for them.
6. Cats will get sick of you at times and they will let you know when that happens.
Like humans, cats want their own space and for you to leave them alone. They are usually in their own zone and you have to let them come to you. You just have to be patient -- when the times comes, it will be worth it.
All in all, if you are a college student, these are some reasons why you should get a cat. You are a busy person, with school and projects and such. Just remember to keep your cat's food and water bowl full along with some petting when they need it, and you should be good to go. Cats do not demand attention all the time and are self-sufficient whether they are strictly indoor cats or go outdoors as well.
