In college you will realize more than ever before that people were raised differently and think differently from you.
After speaking with some friends about things that I always did in the fall while growing up and hearing that they thought I was weird for doing such made me stop and think. I've always been an observant person, especially when people do things differently than I do, but I guess I've never taken into consideration that I may be the one in the wrong.
I decided to conduct a survey. While not too many people participated, enough did for me to get results.
My first question: As a kid growing up did you celebrate Halloween?
The results told me that 86.96 percent said yes, 8.7 percent said no and only 4.35 percent said sometimes.
My follow up question being, if no why? told me that 100% of people who said no said that their parents were conservative.
As a kid Halloween was fun, but carving pumpkins was an art. My family would spend time picking out a pumpkin only to spend more time finding a design to carve on it. We had it down to a science to know how far in advance to buy a pumpkin so that it wouldn't rot. My dad baked the best pumpkin seeds that I would get sick off of because I ate way too many of them
So I had to ask, have you ever carved a pumpkin before?
56.52 percent said yes, 39.13 percent said every year (my kinda people) and 4.35 percent said no.
One could assume that this 4.35 percent are the same people who said they sometimes celebrated Halloween.
My last pumpkin related question gave the participants 3 options (Pumpkin Spice Latte, Carving and Pumpkin and Pumpkin Pie) as well as an option to choose other. The question was simply choose one.
I was happy when only 17.39 percent chose Pumpkin Spice Lattes because I can't stand them. 34.78 percent chose carving a pumpkin and 21.74 percent chose pumpkin pie leaving the 26.09 percent choosing another option. They wrote things such as pumpkin bread, pumpkin bread with chocolate chips, all of the above and one person didn't really understand and wrote candy corn.
My survey consisted of 10 questions, most of which have no point towards the topic of this article, but were questions I was curious to hear the answers too. I asked what the best movie to watch on Halloween is and what the best scary movie is. I also asked if people knew the history of Halloween and it was about 50/50, but honestly I'm not sure if I know the whole history of the holiday.
I would never treat someone bad for being different than me, it's just something I tend to notice. Everyone has a right to do whatever they want during the fall, but if you don't carve pumpkins you're missing out.
