At the beginning of September, Butler University Assistant Police Chief Andrew Ryan collided with another car and registered a BAC of 0.27, this week he returned to work.
Yes, you read that right. Not only did he return to work, but a judge also chose to reinstate his driving privileges because he needed them to perform his job at Butler and to fulfill his role as an instructor at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Academy. I am aware of several jobs that if you are arrested with a DUI, you automatically lose your job, no questions asked. This was not a point or two over the legal limit of 0.08, this was over THREE times that amount. So, how is it that the consequences are so minimal for this? And we are giving him his job and reinstating his driving privileges because he needed them for work? No, what Mr. Ryan should have been doing for his job is representing Butler University, one of the top schools in the Midwest, in a positive manner. He should have been a positive role model to kids on a college campus and to those he is instructing at the IMPD Academy. He shouldn’t have put those around him in danger by driving a vehicle intoxicated, let alone at the level of intoxication. I understand that mistakes happen, but this is quite a mistake to walk away from with minimal consequences. As a resident of Indianapolis and a Butler student, it is disappointing to me that there has been so little done. I am assuming that both parties are waiting until a trial to make an official decision. But come on folks, no one is above the law, especially when breaking that law endangered those around them. The IMPD and Butler will be able to reevaluate later this month. Ryan will appear in court for a hearing October 28th, until then we will wait.
