When studying abroad or visiting Europe, it's tempting to stick to the "typical" itinerary of cities—London, Paris, Barcelona, etc. While these cities are all amazing, and you should certainly visit them if you have the chance, it's also definitely worth your while to go a bit off the beaten path when traveling in Europe. My personal recommendation? Budapest, Hungary. With an eclectic mix of architecture, history, nightlife and beautiful scenery, this stunning city should be on the top of everyone's Euro-trip list. 1. It's completely stunning
The majority of the city was built in the late 1800s, giving the city that classic old-time Europe look, but with a twist—years of neglect during the communist era have left the city with a not-so-polished, somewhat gritty look that, rather than taking away from the beauty of the city, leaves it with a unique and charming character. But the main attraction of Budapest are the bridges that run up and down the powerful Danube. At night their lights reflect off the river, making it sparkle and come alive, each with their own unique look and character. For the best view of the entire city and river, I recommend climbing to the top of the citadel on Buda hill, which allows a stunning view of the whole scene.
2. The nightlife
Ruin pubs are where it's at in Budapest—unique venues that used to be old, run-down buildings that are transformed into crazy, eclectic bars and clubs—and they're everywhere! Not only that, but these clubs are a lot more laid back than those in other large cities in Europe—no need to dress to the nines every single night (unless you want to), there's no fear of not getting in if you're not wearing heels and a tiny dress. Plus, you get tons of bang for your buck, because...
3. It's cheap
The conversion rate from US dollars to Hungarian forints is about 1 dollar to 290 forints. You can find a good meal for 1,500 forints, and drinks at clubs are often around 300 to 800, if that much. Because everything is inexpensive, you can try more of the amazing food and drinks and get to explore more museums and other attractions than you might on a budget in another city. Plus, paying in denominations of 1,000 really makes you feel like you're balling out, even if it's only about $3.
4. The thermal baths
Speaking of Budapest's many attractions, one of the most famous are the beautiful thermal baths, Spa culture has been present in Budapest since Roman times, cultivated during the Ottoman invasion, and still alive and well in the many intricately decorated thermal baths located all around the city. The baths are said to have many medicinal qualities, not to mention being extremely relaxing. If you're feeling brave, you can also attend a "sparty," or spa party, hosted nearly every weekend at the various baths.
5. It's quite the hipster city
As in it's still relatively undiscovered. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and say that you went to Budapest before it was at the top of everyone's Europe list!
