For the past few weeks I have been studying at University of Cambridge and enjoying all of the lovely things England has to offer. But the more I began to think of this place as my home, the more I thought about everything that is going on back in the states. Namely, the upcoming presidential elections. I was curious what the Brits had to say on the subject, as it’s always interesting to talk to an objective party. I began to ask people I met in the markets and in the pubs (I definitely only went there for research purposes) what they thought about Donald Trump. So without further ado, here are some of my favorite responses to the question; What do you think about Donald Trump?
1. “You mean the tosser with the guinea pig glued to his head?” – Christina 20
Yes, Christina. That is exactly who I meant.
2. “Quite an angry little troll, isn’t he?” – Matt 22
I tried playing spot the difference, it's really hard.
3. “If he’s elected, you all are f*cked” – Andrew 22
Trust me, we know.
4. “We’ve been calling him the screaming orange” – Eliza 19
I can't believe I saw this with my own two eyes. I'm haunted.
(also, is anyone else getting flashbacks to the annoying orange?)
5. “He’s a crusty little bastard, we can’t believe he’s even made it this far” – Melanie 23
Crustier than over done fried chicken.
6. “Honestly, I think the Scots said it best” – Helen 20
They definitely did... I've never been prouder of a country in my life.
But getting serious for a moment, this man has
a very real chance to be our president. At this point, it will either be Trump
or Hillary, seeing as there is not a popular enough third party candidate.
From the very moment Trump announced his candidacy, we all thought of it as a
joke. When he started spewing hate speech to anyone who would listen, we all
laughed. It truly did seem ridiculous that anyone like that would get so much
as a single vote. I honestly believed that he was merely pulling a publicity
stunt. Or maybe some clever satire
to point out the flaws of the American political system. I was clearly mistaken, because what was
once an American joke has now become a world wide joke. So while these creative insults from our
friends across the pond are indeed hilarious, it’s time for Americans to sober
up and realize that this is no longer a joke. There are still many people out
there who think that even though he’s made it this far, there’s no way he could
make it all the way. No one hates to say this more than me… but he definitely
can. I personally would not like to live in America circa 1940, so when
November rolls around, don’t forget to vote [ANYONE BUT TRUMP 2016].
And if he does win, at least I’ve made some friends in the UK, because I certainly will not be in America.
