Let's talk about boobs. Whether you love 'em or hate 'em, you've got to deal with 'em. I'm mostly talking to all my ladies out there, but guys, keep reading and make sure you tell the important women in your life about this. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and one of my favorite companies, Aerie, is partnering with the Bright Pink foundation to educate us on breast cancer.
So what exactly does Bright Pink do? According to their website, the non-profit seeks to reach the 52 million young girls in the United States by providing innovative and life-saving breast and ovarian health programs. We all want to live longer and if you've ever known someone with breast cancer, then you know exactly how painful of an experience it can be. Lindsay Avner, Bright Pink's founder, was only 23 when she underwent a risk-reducing double mastectomy.
It's important to know your body and understand what's normal and what's not. Detecting breast cancer early is key, even if it doesn't run in your family. If you aren't sure of your family history, I highly recommend genetic testing. If you find a lump, don't panic because 80% of lumps found end up not being cancerous. To assess your risk, click here.
I never knew much about Bright Pink until I started working at Aerie. Since Aerie is partnered with Bright Pink, we raise money every October to promote breast cancer awareness. What's even more exciting is that a limited edition bra is released each year and 100% of the sales go toward the cause. Our bra for this year is the new Sunnie Demi (although I'm not sure why it isn't hot pink this year). If you're shopping in the store, you can also make a donation at the register along with your purchase. Don't think twice when you're asked to round up to the next dollar for Bright Pink. Support your girls, girl!
