Ariana Grande's "break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored", does not carry the meaning that many think it does.
During the video, as pictured above, there are several scenes where the music video switches between Grande, and the woman portraying Grande. The woman Is dressed almost exactly as Grande; she is adorned with a choker, and wearing the same of earrings. The music video also shows Grande standing in a mirror, and as the camera circles her, it is no longer Grande standing in the reflection, but the woman portraying Grande. These instances in the video are to help show that Grande is the 'girlfriend' of the relationship.
When the lyrics say "break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored", it is saying that Grande wants her own boyfriend to leave her because she is 'bored'. The use of the word 'bored' here is really meaning tired; she is tired of being in the relationship and she wants her boyfriend to leave her, but she does not want to be the one who leaves. I know of many women who find themselves in this position, and do not want to facilitate the 'break up' themselves. In this case, and in terms of this song, Grande wants to be out of the relationship so that she can learn to love herself alone, without the presence of a man. Grande is definitely not promoting the idea of women tearing down relationships.
In the end of the video, Grande is seen kissing the woman who is portraying herself. Many have said that this seen proved that Grande was 'queer baiting', but Grande is supposed to be 'kissing herself'. It is shown to say that she is starting on the road to self love, and she does not need a man to do it; the journey she has started, she has started by herself.
The entire "Thank you, Next" album is an album promoting self love. The song "thank you, next" started it all. The song lyrics say "Plus, I met someone else
We havin' better discussions
I know they say I move on too fast
But this one gon' last
'Cause her name is Ari
And I'm so good with that"
This part of the song is also showing that she is trying to learn to love herself, before trying to love anybody else.
So, for all of the people who are bashing Grande, along with her new song "break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored", I encourage you to take another look at the song, along with the rest of the album. Even if you do not like her music, the movement that she is starting for herself and trying to encourage for others is something to be admired, as it is usually a long and very hard journey to take. It is always ongoing, and even if you do learn how to love yourself, the journey never ends. Some days will just be bad days, but you need to know that is okay, and you can slowly, but surely, learn to love yourself anyway. Those bad days are not the end of the journey, they are just obstacles put in your way to strengthen the love you find for yourself.
"Thank you, next" and "break up with your girlfriend, I'm bored" are the self love anthems that we did not even know we needed. Grande is on a road to self love, and honestly, I want to follow. I hope that you will follow me too.
