It’s summer, and although we often yearn for summer during the winter seasons, when it finally comes, we often find ourselves bored. If you’re like me–currently without a job and taking no college credits or summer school–then you often find yourself at home, alone and with nothing to do. Rather than the ideal version of summer, which includes going to the pool, playing sports outside, gardening, fishing, or lying in a hammock under the shade of a tree, we are instead bombarded with heat waves of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, hoards of bugs flying in our faces, sweating profusely the moment we step outside, and thus, most of our time is spent inside with us staring at our preferred social media site. So, what is one to do with so much free time and a yearning to make good use of it? Here are a few things that might help you when you find yourself in that bored and agitated state.
1. Finish that “To Do List”
There are always things you need to do which you’ve been holding off on for days, months, or even years, and one of these days, you’re going to have to get it done, so you might as well get it done during the summer when you’ve got nothing else to do. If you’re going to be bored, you might as well be bored while doing something productive. The thought of actually getting something done during the summer when you’d prefer to be doing something more fun – but can’t anyways – due to the weather, lack of money, or the difficulty of getting with friends – is a torturous thought. You want to keep putting off that one or 10 things you need to do. Actually putting some effort into doing it is painful, but once you’re done, you’ll feel something is achieved and that you didn’t experience another pointless day of summer.
2. Renovate
This summer, I decided to clean up my room, paint the walls (that were covered in permanent marker drawings), and reorganize everything to make the room more spacious. If you’re tired of the way your room looks and want something new and more organized, then start working! It can even be your kitchen or living room, or something on the outside of your house whether your roof, porch, or yard. It’s always exciting changing something and making it new again – but it takes a lot of work and running to the store several times. If you’re free during the summer though, renovating your house is a great way to spend those hours fast.
3. Garage Sales
These are always fun! Whether you’re shopping for something in particular, or just window shopping, you’ll always find interesting things at garage sales like cool trinkets or nice furniture. Plus, it’s nice to get around the neighborhood and talk to people. You can also host your own garage sale! After you’re done renovating, you’ve probably discovered some items that you don’t need anymore, so what better way to get rid of them? Garage sales are a great way to get a little bit of money for the summer too if you don’t have a job.
4. Discover a new hobby
Start looking for something else to do – even if it seems like a weird thing to do at first. For instance, I randomly saw a calligraphy set at Barnes and Noble and it just looked so awesome that I had to buy it. Therefore, I decided that I’d start learning how to write in calligraphy. You can do something that you’ve always been curious about or else something completely out there such as learning how to skateboard, trying different recipes, learning how to paint, scuba diving, or mastering basketball. It can be anything! It’s always fun trying or learning something new.
Hopefully these suggestions will help you during those boring days of summer when you’re stuck at home with nothing to do because – honestly – most of us only wish we could go to Hawaii. Therefore, if you have nothing to do, don’t let the summer waste away! Do something new, different and productive! Happy summer!
