A Bookworm's Review: "Everything Everything" by Nicola Yoon
Rachel O'Shaughnessy

For as long as I could remember, I have always loved books. As a child, I would sit down with a book and devour it. Picture books, fairy tales, biographies. It has been an continuous love affair that I know will last my entire life. And as a self-proclaimed lover of books, I would like to share some reviews of my favorite books that I would like you, (yes you, you reading this article) to read. The first one I would like to talk about is young-adult novel Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon, in celebration of her upcoming book, The Sun Is Also A Star (it comes out this November 1st).

The story revolves around 18-year-old Madeline Whitter, who lives with her mother in Los Angeles. She loves to read, putting spoiler reviews on Tumblr, would like to be an architect, and wonders what it's like outside her house. She can't leave home because she is allergic to the world. One inhale of unfiltered air, and she could potentially die. Still she leads a happy, normal life, but all of that changes when a family moves next door, bringing Olly Bright all dressed in black.

Now I know what you're thinking: Oh, this is just another boy meets girl, boy next door kind of story. Yes, it is, but what makes the story compelling is that one of the main characters has a life-threatening illness that prevents her from going outside or touching someone that is contaminated with everyday germs and bacteria.

The chemistry between Maddie and Olly is infectious. Since the very beginning, it is clear that they are like-minded souls and are instantly attracted to each other. Despite having different interests and coming from different upbringings, they still share the same wit and humor, and constantly try to make their friendship, then relationship, work, despite the odds.

Also, before I forget, a quick positive to point out is that this book is a quick read. Not only was that contributed by the straightforward-yet-individual writing style, but by the pacing and plot. The story is so engaging that it is, in my opinion, impossible to put down. Actually while reading this book, you should take some breaks in between in order to process what happens as the story advances, because A LOT happens. I don't want to spoil anything from the book, and I have restrained myself from trying to do so, because if I have made you interested in reading the book yourself, I want you to have your own experience with it. Or if you happen to have read Everything Everything, I'll include my spoiler-ridden review from Goodreads below.

Hopefully you have enjoyed this review. I hope I have given you an idea, if you are pondering what book to read next or have been inspired to start reading again. Have a good day and I wish you happy reading!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
