In the first match up against San Diego State University, Boise State came close, but was not able to finish toward the end of the game. The game started out very slowly, with both teams only scoring 12 points total in the first seven minutes of the game. The scoring picked up in the second half, but unfortunately for the Broncos, it was too little too late. With Boise State losing in the final seconds at home 56-53, they lost their home win streak of 17 games, and it was also their first lose in the Mountain West Conference. This game had the 29th largest crowd that the Taco Bell Arena has hosted for a basketball game.
"I thought our team showed a good fight, coming back from that large of a deficit, I believe with the combination of experience and our younger players that I know my team will bounce back," says Tyler Dietrick, a student from Boise State University. Boise State went 1 for 15 from three point range, which is the worst that they have done in a game since 2003. Normally one of the best parts of the Broncos' offense, it was surprising to see Boise State shooting so poorly from a three point range.
Boise State is now second place in the Mountain West after their lose to the Aztecs, with San Diego State taking first place of the Mountain West with a perfect 5-0 record in the conference. At this point in the season, Boise State is still looking at a good spot for the year and is showing great progress after losing one of the best players in Boise State history, Derrick Marks. James Webb III has stepped up in his role, and with Nick Duncan showing a great improvement in the paint, the team is developing in the right direction, so it looks good under Coach Rice.
Boise State will look to bounce back from this loss with great force against a weak San Jose State team on Jan. 20.
