Lately I've been seeing a lot of controversy when it comes to body image. When pictures of people being called "fat" go viral, others go out to defend them. But what I've been seeing lately is tons of people saying that they hate their doctors because they've told them they were morbidly obese. I've seen countless people say that it doesn't make sense because they don't look obese or unhealthy, but in reality, being morbidly obese has nothing to do with how fat someone looks. Truth is, appearance doesn't always say much about someone's health. There are some obvious times when it does, but sometimes it isn't as apparent. It has to do with weight and height.
Society puts the image in our heads, medicine puts down the facts. Ignore what society says and listen to professionals and do what is best for you.
Fact of it is, if you are a certain height and above a certain weight, there is a lot of strain on your body. Extra weight can mean you're having too much force on your knees. Being overweight leads to problems with respiration and also heart problems. It is important to control your weight, not so you can look good, but so you can live a healthy life and avoid diseases caused by lifestyle choices. Not only that, but being overweight causes higher blood pressure and can lead to a higher risk of stroke.
Yes, sometimes you can look yourself in the mirror and tell that you may be a little overweight, but other times you can't. It's a bad feeling being told that you are overweight or obese but I can assure you that doctors are not doing it to tell you that you don't look good. Being overweight does not make you ugly and it certainly should not be a reason for you to feel bad. The way that our bodies are developed makes it really hard for our weight to stay the same. BMI calculators are not always accurate, but they are a good way to see if you are on the right track. Don't be discouraged if a scale tells you something you don't want to hear, instead, use that as motivation to live the healthy life you want.
It is always important to try to stay in shape and be healthy because we will thank ourselves in the future. Also, it's important to remember that no matter what weight you're at, there is healthy ways to stay in shape. Don't crash diet because you are overweight, and definitely do not skip meals. Exercise, eat right, and get plenty of sleep. The only way to get a better you, is to do it in a better way. Body image is not everything. The most important thing is that you take care and love yourself.
