SIS.

What's up? You doing okay? Are you moisturized? Drinking enough water? Staying stress free? Good. Look, I called this meeting to bring us all together for one final happy moment in 2016. We all need one, right? Let's discuss some of the many things that unite us a group: Black Girl Experiences. *hits the gavel*

1. Being too tired to wrap your hair at night

Never have I ever typed something so true and so quickly. Man, when you're getting in from work or a late night and you KNOW you need to wrap that twist out/blow out/sew in/head full of braids. Idk about y'all but I gotta go through my whole repertoire of products when I wrap mine. Looking at my hair like "sis you can go 1 night okay?". She cannot. She wakes up looking like boo boo the fool.

2. Watching YouTube makeup videos and having to search forever for a video with a Black girl using that same product

LOOK. Concealer, foundation, setting powder, you name it boo. Now, I'll watch a tutorial by any woman who slays the beauty blender but man ... sometimes I spend what feels like an eternity searching for a video with that EXACT product being used by a black girl who is near my shade. It's honestly a ritual.

3. Speaking of makeup, being taken back when you see you White friends' makeup shades

IDK about you but every time I see my sorority sisters' makeup I get a tad shell shocked because I don't always think about us being different races, so when I see their products I have a come to Jesus moment. It's no shade! I just get so caught up in searching for my shade that when I see something that light I'm a little discombobulated. I'm sure vice versa happens for them. It's life.

4. When you're trying to find some decent bundles...

And you research like a final presentation on Malaysian Loose Curl is due the next day because you don't wanna deal with tangling, shedding, or corn chip smells. Freshman year of college I searched for 2 hours to find a good virgin hair vendor. I gave up. Also ... #WhatFrontal? Ummmm THAT frontal (some of y'all will catch that!)

5. Spending an hour in the hair care aisle at Target...

Because so many more hair care products have been added and you all of a sudden need new leave in, curl enhancer, edge control, co-wash, and growth oil. Your pockets are in TEARS.

6. The magical sisterhood that takes place amongst a group of Black girls who don't know each other

It's such a phenomenon! When we get together, folks rarely can tell we aren't best friends. Whether it's swapping advice on hair products or asking about a song title we just link up whenever and it's cool as hell.

7. The animosity that occurs when you're playing Destiny's Child or Cheetah Girls...

And you don't want to be Michelle or Aqua. I'm CRYING! I always fought to be Beyoncé and Galleria. No questions. Every Black girl knows that a fight will occur and you'll never get to play because someone got stuck being Michelle. (That sucks because she's great tbh)

8. Realizing you are turning into a real life version of the Black mom memes (aka ya mama)

I've definitely said to my roommates "dang all these dishes in the sink?!" and there was exactly 2 spoons fam. It's inevitable. Soon you'll start telling people they smell like outside or asking someone to thaw something for you while you're on your way home. Don't fight it. It's a rite of passage.

9. Giving a deep side eye when anyone who isn't a Black woman saying they have "an inner Black woman"

Yeah, okay. You will once I shove my f.. nevermind. I know we all get heated when we hear that. Then, you have a moment of laughter because you realize that sounds ridiculous... and you keep being your magical self. Isn't that some sweet flattery? They wanna be you!

10. SIS

This word can be kind, shady, disrespectful, or endearing and you know what I mean. Hahahaha never have I heard a non-expletive with so much versatility.

Meeting adjourned :) It's cool how no matter where we're from we have this collection of experiences - sisterhood, honestly. Tell me what Black Girl Experiences you can think of. Keep on being magical, love. Thanks for reading!

Pack light, y'all.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
