Have I done a review for anime yet? I know I’ve done several reviews on animated shows like Steven Universe, Young Justice, and F is for Family, but I don’t think I have actually written one about an anime. Guess I’ll have to start with this one. Today we are talking about "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works." No seriously that’s the actual title. I wish I had something less ridiculous to talk about this week, but it’s been a pretty crazy last couple of days. However, I digress. Anyways let’s talk about Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work
If you’re a normal person, you probably don’t watch a lot of anime. So you might be wondering, “What makes an anime enjoyable to watch?” Well, I’ve watched a decent amount of anime in my day so I know that it’s all sorts of things that makes an anime awesome. Great music, interesting/relatable characters as well as their development, captivating story and a good overall concept. And with a show like Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Work, it doesn’t live to those standards. (I think the longer the anime title is the worse the actual show is.) I’m disappointed in myself for choosing such a lame anime to start with. Seriously there are so many shows on Netflix that are way better.
So the basis of the show is that there are seven competing mages in modern day japan (an anime that takes place in japan? Shocker) who summon a special warrior or hero to serve them in a “holy grail war”. They are competing for said grail which will grant them one wish. The competition is they kill each other.
So why does an otoku (anime nerd) such as myself not like Fate/Stay Night? How about because it lacks just about everything I said what makes an anime great. For starters, the show is full of excessive exposition, making the plot entirely boring. The show’s strengths are its somewhat flashy fight scenes, but they aren’t anything special, or in a sense, “trend setting”. In fact, the fights are boring too. They last too long, and there’s a point where you’re just like, “okay I get it they’re trying to kill each other.” Characters are boring as well theirs no one who is really worth rooting for, nor do you really care about them. Although there was this budding romance between two characters that I actually enjoyed for a bit but it didn’t keep me invested in the show.
Overall Fate/Stay night is not really a good watch. It’s background noise for your dungeons and dragons party. The show is so boring, that the expositions in it needs to be said twice because you would have fallen asleep while listening to these characters talk about their lives. Honestly, you want to watch a good anime? Go watch Death Note. Seriously, if you want an anime to surprise you and make you feel like you’re watching Breaking Bad, try watching Death Note its good brah.
Score: 2/5
