This past weekend at the Olympic Games, both American gymnastics teams did absolutely incredible. Each gymnast qualified for at least one individual event final, with an American woman leading each apparatus. The women are going into finals almost 10 points higher than the second place team; in a sport usually decided by tenths of a point, the United States women are truly dominating gymnastics. Watching the live stream during the afternoon as well as the NBC broadcast at night, I truly couldn't contain my emotions because I am just so proud of all these gymnasts. These moments in particular were some of the most memorable among the American women.
1. Anytime Simone Biles did anything.
Simone is, as everyone now knows, the best gymnast in the world and, quite possibly, the best female gymnast in the history of gymnastics. When I interviewed her last September and got to talk to her, she told me about her decision to go elite because she wanted to compete and travel around the world. She has come so far, and I couldn't be prouder of and happier for her.
2. Aly's Amanar.
She's improved so much on this vault even since Olympic Trials, and the pure joy on her face during Podium Training was amazing to see.
3. Laurie's facial expressions during floor.
Not to mention her absolutely incredible tumbling and dancing. She just seemed so at home and in her element in her Olympic debut.
4. Gabby's satisfaction after bars.
A moment of relief after an impeccable routine.
5. The crowd chanting for Laurie before floor.
I couldn't hold back the tears.
6. The moment we got a glimpse of the patriotic leotards.
Shoutout to Simone's snapchat.7. Madison's high score on bars.
YES MADDIE proving yourself as the reigning co-World Champion on bars.
8. The girls waving at the alternates in the stands.
Ashton Locklear, MyKayla Skinner, and Ragan Smith, the alternates for Rio, have been training hard in Rio despite the fact that they knew they would most likely not be competing. However, they are cheering their teammates on every step of the way and it is amazing to see such sportsmanship from these girls. 9. When Aly earned her spot in the AA final.
My heart literally stopped for a split second when she almost fell off of the beam, but she was strong and fierce, staying on and earning herself a spot in the All Around final.
10. All of the hugs.
The bond between these girls makes my heart happy.
Now it's time to shine in the Team Finals on Tuesday, August 9 at 3:00 PM Eastern Time! Make sure to watch and cheer on Team USA!
