3 Ways To Give Back During The Season Of Giving

Where, how, and why we should all donate our time or money this holiday season

There is sometimes a negative connotation with the phrase "giving back." Immediately, people think of donating tremendous amounts of money to causes they aren't associated with or have any ties to. It can be misunderstood as a mechanism for guilt or shame. In actuality, giving back doesn't have to mean money at all. Donations of any kind are valuable to local communities and organizations. This can include donating time, skills, food or, yes, money. During the holiday season, there is even more emphasis on giving back. Here are a few simple, yet sustainable ways you can donate this season.

1. Donate to your local food bank

Food insecurity is more prevalent in our society than we think. There are currently over 3 million people in Florida alone who don't know where their next meal will come from. By picking up a few extra items at the grocery store or even letting go of those unopened cans of soup in your pantry, you can help just an individual or family eat. In Gainesville, visit the Field and Fork Pantry on-campus (specifically targeted towards UF students with food insecurity) or the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank (to benefit the greater Gainesville community).

2. Buy Christmas gifts for kids

There are many programs that can connect you with children whose parents do not have the income to buy their kids many Christmas gifts. Toys for Tots is a national effort that is localized through drop-off locations near you. , drop off unopened, unwrapped toys in a donation box and the nonprofit will distribute them to kids in your area. There are many drop-off points on-campus, but be sure to check their website for specific info. If you are looking to make a more global impact, Operation Christmas Child ships shoeboxes filled with toys worldwide to kids that would otherwise not receive gifts. Pack your own shoebox and drop it off at a local checkpoint, or print a shipping label offline.

3. Volunteer at a soup kitchen/homeless shelter

One of the best ways to donate this season is to donate your time. Many local nonprofits rely on the hard work of volunteers to keep up with the increased need in their community. These organizations have a variety of tasks they can use assistance with, ranging from set-up, clean-up, food prep, and even food distribution. In Gainesville, the St. Francis House is always looking for volunteers. Complete the short application found on their website to get started.
