To My Best Friend

We all have one.

To My Best Friend,

Thanksgiving is coming up and I am feeling especially sentimental, so I'd like to thank you for some things you've done for me over the past 16 years.

1. Thank you for being my doctor. Thank you for dealing with every text that said, "My head hurts — do I have brain cancer?" or, "Is this rash on my arm normal?" There's no way in hell you'd actually ever know the real medical answers to any of these questions, but all of your "you're fine" texts help.

2. Thank you for being my therapist. I am super bad at expressing feelings, so thank you for sitting tight and watching me squirm to express myself. Other times I have too many feelings, so thank you for dealing with random emotional texts out of the blue like a pro.

3. Thank you for letting me live at your house. I can eat any of the food I want, use any of y'all's phone chargers, lay on the couch when no one is home and I can't remember the last time I actually knocked on your door.

4. Thank you for "Top Model" nights. For weeks, we had Tyra Fridays and cookie dough, and for these small memories I will be always grateful.

5. Thank you for reminding me I'm not funny. You're the only person who won't politely laugh at my bad jokes — you let me know when they are awful, and sometimes you make a point of telling me so.

6. Thank you for always making a big deal out of my birthday. You never forget it, and there are always gifts and smiles (you know birthdays are a big deal to me).

7. Thank you for all the weird favors. I'll do Zumba for charity with you if you help me make 100 caramel apples before midnight...

8. Thank you for always making me feel better when I'm sad. All of your encouraging and tough love texts always remind me that people have it a lot worse out there, and that I will definitely get through whatever has me down at that particular moment.

9. Thank you for loving my weirdness. Seriously, I say some weird things, and you never flinch.

10. Thank you for all the fighting. There's no one I would have ever wanted to get into stupid fights with in middle school. You taught me that friendship is way more important than any drama anyone can throw at us.

I love you to the moon!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
