Best Friend Phases

Thank you all for being a part of my life.

Best Friend Phases
Emily Stapleton

I'd like to thank all of my previous best friends. I have had a lot of them. I've never kept a best friend for long. Possibly because I can be a bit over bearing and sometimes just crazy. Sometimes it just doesn't work. Things change and people grow apart, but I wouldn't be who I am without all of you. I'd like to thank you all. Especially the two who would still be there for me any time I call! Growing up would not be the same without these special people! I don't know if everyone has had these phases like I have. Maybe you've had the same best friend for 16 years. I don't know, but If so maybe you can relate to my list.

1. The pre-k best friend

I don't know what a 4-year-old bonds with someone over usually but ours was hair. I complimented your hair and we were best friends after that. We stayed best friends until grade school. More friends showed up and we just didn't have the time for all the people we loved!

2. The strange bond

I remember suddenly coming into friendship with this one girl solely based on our weirdness. We were in like fifth grade and we were just odd. I guess everyone has a weird phase but I wouldn't trade ours for the world!

3. Middle school

You were a new student that year. I met you before school started because my sisters friend knew you. We were inseparable after the first day. Every group project we did together. We went wild on Mardi Gras. I stayed at Maw Maws house every weekend with you, and sometimes on school nights too! You were the beginning of my wild days, and I will be forever grateful for that!

4.The best friend from the other school

Girl, I did everything with you. I stayed at your house every weekend. You introduced me to my husband! I even plucked your eyebrows and colored your hair once. I attended every dance recital and loved every minute! You were always my best friend, although sometimes it was clear I was just another one in the gang to you.

5. The cheerleader

I was a couple grades older than you but as soon as you tried out for cheer you were mine. I claimed you as my little and from then on you were my girl. Driving to and from cheer belting out Broadway songs or Garth Brooks. I'll always be calling Baton Rouge with you even if you live in Arizona!

6. The four of us

Football games, parties out in Blanchard, Yearbook staff, going to the farm, and staying at mikes apartment because he was the cool dad! You four were what made my days in high school. Doing things with a group of best friends is by far the best. Between staying out late and doing group projects, and actually going to school, I don't think we spent more than ten minutes apart ever.

7. The baddest

You are the reason I am who I am today. You made me tough. You made me grow up. I was so sheltered until I met you. I met you when I was in eighth grade and we were good friends. Good enough friends that after the first night we hung out you were deemed a bad influence and was no longer allowed to see you but as soon as I got my license you were the first I went to pick up! Not until later in high school did you become the baddest of the bad B****es. You are my best friend. The days of sneaking out and partying all night are my favorite to reminisce on.

Three words... Reverse speed bumps.

"What are all those strange bruises from?" "I don't know Memaw!" (Definitely not the window I climbed out of last night!)

"Here hold the wheel while I proceed to throw up out of my window." (because I sang so loud that I gagged.)

"You're getting this tattoo, you aren't leaving without it. You wanted it so now you're getting it!"

You were the bad influence that I loved. You introduced me to some of my favorite people (especially that day at the tattoo shop). I'm so grateful for you. You also love my child like she is your own and I couldn't ask for a better bad b***** to have around.

8. College

I've been cursing you since the day you left to move back home. You are my twink. My twin. My partner in crime. I love you to the moon and back. You are the perfect mixture of crazy and needy two year old. There is nothing I wouldn't do for you, including standing by you when you say I do! I couldn't be more blessed. Honestly neither could you because who would be packing your apartment if it weren't for me?

I hope you've all enjoyed this blast from the past! I will be forever grateful to you all. You all had such an impact on my life and I definitely wouldn't be here without you! I just wish I could go back and relive these days because who doesn't want to be drunk off Jolly Rancher Taaka, or hanging out in the Dicks parking lot "Bernie-ing" on top of the Xterra?!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
