A Couple Things I Wish My Best Friend Knew Right Now

A Couple Things I Wish My Best Friend Knew Right Now

It’s our third week of college and it’s not the same. Part of me wishes you and I were at the same school, but the other part of me knows we are both learning to become our own person with this three hundred mile gap. I miss you, dude. I miss our late night food runs, our eno dates, and our “getting in shape” phases. I miss us. Remember when people would joke around that we were “goals” and how everyone used to say we would get separation anxiety once we both went our separate ways? Boy, they were right.

I wish you knew how hard it was for me to let you go for (the whole summer) summer camp, knowing that I’d have to let you go again for college. That I’d have to make new friends during that time period and secretly wish that they were all just you. That I was heartbroken every time you would talk about Ole Miss and how you were so set on it. I knew it was coming, but I never actually wanted to even think about college without my best friend.

I wish you knew I cried my little eyes out when our parents sent us the same selfie as they went out on the boat without us and that we really are just one big family. That no matter where we are or what we’re doing, we can count on our parents to have fun together if we can’t. That you never need an invitation for family dinners or parties. And that you’re obviously part of the family and nothing can change that (because they miss you and love you just as much as I do).

I wish you knew how sorry I am because I’m stubborn and didn’t cry or show any bit of emotion on the way out of your door on the last night you were here and that I didn't even help you fold your clothes when I came over to pack. I’m sorry I didn’t text you once to see how you were doing or how your move in was on the day we both moved in.

I wish you knew how much I needed you for my 2 a.m. breakdowns because I know you know how to stop them. How the certain things you can do or say could change my whole mood. I wish you were here to comfort me right now, as I’m writing this, bawling my eyes out, missing you.

I wish you knew how happy I was when I met you, that we became friends because we are both from a huge city and moved to a small town. I met someone in the same position as me that knew where I was coming from. To understand my homesickness and to cry about it together. I'm happy because we built such a strong, beautiful friendship on something that's so different from everything else. You're my person.

I wish you knew how much I wished you were here for our first tailgate and football game or party or even my first day of class. There're so many "firsts" in college and it still makes me sad that I can't experience them with you. I miss my partner in crime and it's no fun telling you about my stories, when you used to be in them.

I wish you knew how much of an inconvenience it is for me to find someone to do everything with that we used to. Someone as adventurous and spur-of-the-moment as you. Someone that's basically down for anything at anytime. Hey, no one has come close.

I wish you knew how much I want the best for you, for us, as our first semester of college continues. See ya at Christmas, pal.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
