I'm sure you've heard of the new political sensation sweeping the nation, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist, the candidate who has people on both sides of the party spectrum buzzing, new and seasoned voters alike. The televised media may keep his name hush-hush, however his picture decorates social media.
We know who he is, but what does he stand for? Educating yourself on the issues may not be fun, however it's a crucial part of participating in the United States elections in November, and even sooner, the remaining primaries.
Here, I've compiled a simplified list of Senator Sanders' stances on some hot topics for you:
Topic One: Immigration.
He wants to make the lives of immigrants better.
Although immigration has been a conversation starter in previous elections, Trump's talks regarding the wall have brought it to the forefront of our minds.
Sanders, opposing Trump, has dedicated himself to help out the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.A. He does not see them as an "issue" as many Americans have, and he believes that the best course of action is to discontinue the negative stigma that we hold against them; they are here, and they have families just like you and me-- let them live in peace rather than fear. He also wants to move forward with President Obama's proposition, the Dream Act, which will give opportunities to the children of immigrants that were born in the U.S.A.
Topic Two: Abortion.
He is pro-choice.
This issue is much more straight forward than the last. Plain and simple, Senator Sanders stands behind women and their right to choose.
“I happen to believe that it is wrong for the government to be telling a woman what to do with her own body,” Sanders said.
Topic Three: Guns.
You can have your guns as long as you're mentally stable.
Alright, I know how important guns are to people, as I grew up in a small town. Everyone gets up in arms (pun intended) when their guns are brought into question, and I want to tell you right now: Bernie does not want to take your guns.
Don't worry, you will still be able to form a militia if the government gets too overpowering, as the second amendment intended. However, Senator Sanders does have some ideas on how to lessen the growing number of gun violence instances. First and foremost, Bernie would like to ban civilian possession of assault weapons, and disallow people from using the loophole that "they bought it at a gun show" to suffice as authorization to own a gun. In addition, he is in favor of creating lengthier and more thorough background checks in order to weed out some of the possible contenders for gun violence, while in turn attempting to get those who cannot pass a mental health examination the help that they need.
Topic Four: Taxes.
Tax the wealthy.
This topic is something that have gained a lot of followers for Senator Sanders but has also brought him a lot of doubt.
Lower and middle class families have had their taxes skyrocket over the past years, and Sanders says that has to stop. It's unfair that children must starve and live in poverty so that well-off businessmen can pad their pockets. He has stated that he will work to take money out of the pockets of large corporations by taking away their tax breaks and adding taxes, as well as eliminate the opportunity for these businesses to skip out on taxes by shipping to offshore tax havens.
Topic Five: Health Care.
Health care is a right, not a privilege.
As a democratic socialist, this is one of the ideas that he has leaning toward the "socialist" side of things. Like many countries around the world have said, Bernie has emphasized that health care should not be treated as a privilege; every one deserves decent health services. He is in favor of a "Medicare-for-all single health care system" which is relatively self explanatory.
Topic Six: Jobs.
Every person deserves a life without financial struggle.
Bernie Sanders is a key player in the "living wage" fight. He believes that each and every person deserves a wage on which it is reasonable to sustain themselves. In addition to this, he is in favor of investing federal money to put millions of Americans back to work in order to stimulate our economy.
Topic Seven: Crime and Justice.
It's time to fix the broken justice system.
As country, we have institutionalized racism since our earliest days, leading to a higher crime rate among colored youth who are not provided with the same basic necessities as white youth, as well as a sizable amount of race-related crimes against these very same people. As President, Bernie Sanders intends to fight back against the institution of racial discrimination through a faster investigation process when it comes to police brutality against the aforementioned people. He also wants to demilitarize the police force in order to lessen the possibility of police brutality cases. In addition, Bernie wants to eliminate for-profit prisons in order to have them under government control. Finally, Bernie wants to rethink the War on Drugs. With marijuana included in the mix of drugs, it has put more people in prison than necessary, and it has been more of a failure than a success.
Topic Eight: Environment and Energy.
Let's go green.
Global warming is real, and it's terrifying. For that reason, Senator Sanders backs the national switch to clean energy. Some of the ways that he plans to do this are taxing carbon pollution, repealing fossil fuel subsidies, and investing in clean energy such as solar and wind power systems.
Topic Nine: Education.
Free public education shouldn't just be Pre-K to Twelfth grade.
It's no mystery that with a competitive job market, it's difficult to get a decent job without a college degree. However, the average college student ends up with $29,000 in debt after graduation, meaning they have to spend the rest of their life paying off the loans. Because of this, Bernie has taken note of countries world wide that have offered low tuition or tuition free higher education and succeeded, and he plans to try to implement this in the United States. Also, he has proposed to lower interest rates on loans taken out by students in order to pay off this expensive affair. Overall, he just wants to make education an option for everyone, regardless of their family's income.
Topic Ten: National Security.
A strong military is excellent, but let's not go overboard.
Senator Sanders understands that the United States military needs to be in tip top shape, and he agrees that military spending is a crucial part of the federal budget, however he has some ideas on how to cut costs. The United States is in possession of thousands of nuclear weapons which are all stored and maintained on our soil. It is an incredibly costly procedure, and those expenses could potentially be shifted to more pressing issues at hand. He said, "The Cold War is over," referencing the need to cut down on nukes. They're not needed. The other issue that Bernie touches on is regarding the phone tap system; most of the phone calls made in the U.S. end up on record, and that is an invasion of privacy. Sanders calls for an end to this practice, as it is unnecessary and just wastes money.
All in all, Bernie Sanders, the liberal that corporations fear, has shaken Washington D.C. with his big ideas. One of the many arguments against him is that his ideas are "too big" and "too unrealistic." However, the people that say these things don't look at the fact that candidates across the board have made large propositions that seemed too good to be true. You have to start somewhere, so why not aim high?
Change isn't created when people sit quietly and do what they're told. Stand up. Be part of the change. Have your voice heard. Join the revolution. #FeelTheBern
