Do you want to know what all the fuss about Bernie Sanders is? Want to know why so many young people are becoming his biggest fans? When thinking of this country’s next president, I like to think that they will be someone who has the people’s best interest in mind. As someone who has been involved in politics long before I could even vote, Bernie Sanders is one of the most upfront and honest politicians I have ever come across.
1. He wants to make tuition in public colleges free.
Now before you close this article and say “that’s not possible” or “that will degrade the meaning of my diploma,” just hear me out. Just this past year, Germany made college tuition free for all students because they thought $1,300 was standing between students and college. I would consider myself extremely lucky if I attended a public college where the tuition was only $1,300. Another thing a lot of people do not realize that up until the ‘80s, the University of California offered free tuition for all of its students. With Sanders’ plan put into action that would be the case for all public universities across the nation.
2. He has a plan to reverse the immorality of making profits off of students.
As a middle class student, it is close to impossible to attend college without taking out student loans. Who can you take out loans from? The government. It is estimated that the government has made about $110 billion off of student loan programs. Bernie Sanders will eliminate all of the unethical profits being made off of students and will use that government money to lower interest rates on the student loans.
3. He believes that income and wealth inequality is the great economic issue of our time, and has a plan to eliminate it.
It is not a myth that 1 percent of Americans own 46 percent of this country’s wealth. Since they have so much wealth, why should it be a problem for them to pay their fair share of taxes? Sanders plans on enforcing it, if elected. We have citizens who work 40 hours per week, yet they are still living in poverty. The poverty could be eliminated if Sanders’ plan is implemented. By 2020, he plans to have the minimum wage raised to $15/hr.
Right-wingers will continuously complain about government spending, but I’m sure they would also complain about a pothole that blows out their tire as well. With this being said, Sanders has a plan to employ millions of Americans just by improving public structures, roads, railways, etc. Yes, this is government spending, but spending that is going to do nothing but improve and strengthen our economy. Remember when FDR took time to rebuild the infrastructure?
4. He has a plan to strengthen and expand Social Security.
I am not only a middle class college student, but I am also the daughter of two senior citizens. Just these past few years I have seen my parents, who have worked their entire lives, worry that they are retiring too early (both were approaching 70) and that they would not have enough money to live off of. Sanders plans to lift the caps on those high income households ($250,000+) so that those who worked their entire lives can retire with poise.
5. He plans to make healthcare a basic human right.
The United States is the only industrialized country that does not provide healthcare for its citizens. Under Bernie Sanders, there would be an enactment of a single-payer healthcare system, where a single college student like myself would longer have to worry about paying $200/month for a healthcare plan.
So, I’m feeling “The Bern” and I would love to see what this country could become if Sanders not only wins the democratic nomination, but if he wins the presidency. It would not only make our country better externally, but the citizens of the United States would become even happier because the burdens that worry almost every American would, hypothetically, be lifted.
