Having a pet is an absolute blessing and I still remember the day I got my first cat. Since then, I've acquired two other kitties and have had two dogs. Pets are absolutely a part of the family. I show off pictures of my pets like I'd show off pictures of my kids (if I had any). Owning a pet is a huge responsibility, as animals aren't toys, but if you have the ability to take an animal into your home, there are so many benefits that accompany having a pet.
1. Builds responsibility
Animals are not as self sufficient as humans. They can't reach into the cabinet and pour themselves a bowl of cereal if they get hungry. They rely on you for food, water, shelter, a clean living space and more. You have to be willing to put time and effort in to care for a pet no matter if it's a cat, dog, hermit crab, gerbil, etc.
2. They're great listeners.
Coming home to a pet and being able to talk about your day or vent about whatever is surprisingly relieving, considering they can't talk back. They'll never tell you what you don't want to hear and will never interrupt you. From my past experience, I've felt that my pets have become more loving and affectionate when I'm upset as if they were trying to comfort me.
3. Pets always provide entertainment.
Cats and dogs are balls of energy and will play with you for hours if you let them. It's not just playing with them that is the fun part though. Animals are unique and each one has their own weird tendencies, which is enjoyable to observe. For example, my one cat only eats dry food by picking it up with his paw and dipping it in water. My new kitten is afraid of the rug and will jump feet in the air if it moves. Just observing their daily routines is enjoyable in itself.
4. They may not be able to get a job and make money, but they pay you back in other ways.
Cats are great hunters and I've never had to worry about mice or bugs in my house since having cats. You can train dogs to get you a drink from the fridge or turn off the light if desired. They may not be able to physically pay you back with real money, but they do so in many other ways.
5. There's no love like the love of a furry friend.
Their love is entirely unconditional and devoted to you. My pets are always so excited to see me when I get home every single time. Hearing the purring of your cat or seeing the wagging tail of your dog because your pet is so overwhelmingly excited to see you is heartwarming and the best welcome home.
6. Never fail to cheer me up.
I could have a horrible day at work and the worst day in the entire world and still the charm of my pets would win me over. They're so innocent, pure and devoted to you. The thought of taking my anger out on them would break my heart. They'll still be excited to see me, will listen to my bad day and will be able to cheer me up regardless.
7. There are health benefits that accompany having a pet.
It has been shown that growing up with pets can reduce your risk of allergies. Pet owners tend to have lower cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Dog owners tend to be in better shape since they have to take their precious pups for walks daily. Pets fight off feelings of depression and loneliness. Not only is adopting good for them, but it is beneficial for you as well. Check out Animal Planet Benefits of Pets.
8. They'll never judge you.
Pets don't care what color your skin is, if your hair is straight or curly, whether you failed a class in college or not, etc. They'll still love you regardless as long as you continue to take care of them and show them the love they deserve, nothing else matters.
Animals are a gift from God and I'm thankful every day for my two kitties. Life would be pretty dull without them by my side. If cats or dogs aren't your cup of tea, there are so many different types of animals that are less maintainence to chose from that would still be rewarding.
