Ben Franklin's 13 Irrelevant Virtues

They didn't age very well.

Everyone knows Benjamin Franklin for his ingenious idea to fly a kite with a key attached to it during a storm. He’s also pretty famous for his hand in crafting our nation’s government, as well as his presence on the $100. What they don’t know Big Ben for is for his 13 Virtues; it seems like most old white historical figures also dabbled in philosophy, and he was no exception.

Ben held that these 13 beliefs that guided his behavior, and we can all probably take a leaf out of his book. Or not, because these were from the early 1800’s and he was a xenophobic hypocrite.

1. Temperance

ā€œEat not to dullness, drink not to elevation.ā€ So basically, don’t get too drunk or stoned, and don’t eat until you hurt. But Ben’s enthusiasm for wine disregarded Virtue #1, so you can too.

2. Silence

ā€œSpeak not but what may benefit others or yourself.ā€ That means that all that music you’re listening to is a no go. Welp.

3. Order

ā€œAll things should have their place, and all schedules should be followed.ā€ This one stands the test of time, so just be glad that you’re not hailing a horse and buggy to get to your next appointment.

4. Resolution

ā€œPerform without fail what you resolve.ā€ The same way Ben wanted to tie giant hydrogen balloons on slaves so that they could zip through the streets a little lighter and deliver messages quicker.

5. Frugality

ā€œWaste nothing.ā€ Seems fair enough. I have no criticism.

6. Industry

ā€œLose no time. Always be employed in something useful.ā€ I’d love to ask Ben what he would define as ā€œusefulā€, considering his penchant for storm chasing. On horseback.

7. Sincerity

ā€œUse no hurtful deceit.ā€ Again, fair enough. Human nature can probably benefit from more of this. Well done, Ben.

8. Justice

ā€œWrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.ā€ To put it brazenly, don’t be a d*ck.

9. Moderation

ā€œAvoid extremes.ā€ Ben was talking about this in the context of extreme activity that could cause bodily harm, but again… storm chasing. On horseback.

10. Cleanliness

ā€œTolerate no uncleanness in body, clothes, or habitation.ā€ Amen to this. College kids, please learn from this one. If they could keep clean despite the lack of deodorant back in the 19th century, so can we.

11. Tranquility

ā€œBe not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.ā€ YOLO. He’s giving you a free pass to accept your fate. So if you’re sick with the flu, take advantage of it and stay in bed while knowing that a founding father is proud of you.

12. Chastity

ā€œ Rarely use venery but for health or offspring.ā€ No, he didn’t think that everyone should be celibate forever. And ā€œhealthā€ could probably cover a pretty wide berth of activity. But he would probably frown upon PDA, and definitely didn’t approve of anyone’s extramarital affairs.

13. Humility

ā€œImitate Jesus and Socrates.ā€ Okay, Ben. Will do. Thanks.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
