Being Limitless

Why our excuses hold us back.

Being Limitless

Excuses. In recent days nobody knows how to fend for themselves; if something goes wrong somebody else is to blame. When we fail we feel the need to make some other poor and unfortunate soul a failure as well. We blame everyone else but ourselves for our actions. We fail a test, well, the teacher didn't prepare us. We lose a game, well, the coach didn't work us hard enough. We argue with our partner, our friends, well, the stress has been killing me and caused me to act out.

In losing situations we are so quick to blame everyone else and be done with things that we never allow ourselves to grow. We, as people, set our goals so high, but we never seem to want to put in the work and effort to reach these goals. As soon as something goes wrong instead of investigating our actions and figuring out where and why things went wrong, we feel as though we can't build upon ourselves; we can't accept the blame for our own mistakes, the burden is too heavy, so the blame gets placed on somebody else.

Being limitless means accepting vulnerability; it means setting your eye on the prize and knowing that you will do whatever it takes in order to build yourself to fit that perfect model that you have focused in on. Being limitless allows us to accept that things go wrong, to investigate (be curious) on why things turn out the way they do. Being limitless shows that with every outcome there is a reason: failed a test? Maybe you should've studied a different way. Out of shape? Maybe you should push yourself harder at practice.

Being limitless is pushing the boundaries and doing everything in your mind humanly possible to set yourself up for success. Not stopping, not giving up because of one bad day, not giving up when times are tough and make it difficult to succeed. Being limitless means not fearing rejection, not being distracted by what is cool. Distraction only hinders us.

In this day in age people rely on connection; they limit themselves to what is given to them without ever thinking further for themselves or trying to raise the expectations placed on them. They look at how they were raised, they look at where they come from and send themselves to the fate that they are destined to do the same.

With our economy, people settle for jobs they don't love. They don't take risks, they limit themselves to the basics, the first opportunity handed to them. Even if they know they are better they give up. Try, go for it, and in the end if you still are unhappy change your goals and start over in the search to be the best you. It is OK to give up on things, but only if giving up gets you further invested in other long term goals. We all have potential; some have to find it. Talent is something we are born with, but skill is something we have to work for. And with reading this I hope that you all can pledge yourselves to strive for the stars and be limitless.

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
