For the longest time, I’ve found comfort in a pair of dark washed jeans and a simple top. I didn’t challenge my fashion sense but I admired everyone who was confident enough to rock a multi-color faux fur jacket on a simple trip to Target. It’s definitely not easy to feel comfortable when you’re wearing a piece that’s most definitely an attention-grabber. But that’s the fun part, having all eyes on you because you have a badass sense of fashion and you’re totally rocking it. Throwing myself into the fashion world and completely changing my style wasn’t easy; it was fun, nerve-wracking, and expensive but I’m completely obsessed with my closet and if I feel like wearing red heeled booties to class I sure as hell will. It’s incredible what a little ounce of confidence and some new clothes can truly do to a person.
The very first step is to simply love yourself. If you learn to accept, cherish and love your body, your features, and your imperfections, you'll achieve a new sense of self-respect and self-love. It's important to feel good about what you have on the inside before you focus on the outside. You wear your clothes before your clothes wear you. Feeling confident in yourself first helps you feel a thousand times more confident when you're strutting your stuff down the streets of Manhattan.
Shopping for new pieces to add to your closet isn't easy. Seasons change but the trends change even more, and these are important things to keep up with (just like the Kardashians). First take a look at what you already have in your closet and recycle those forgotten gems. Just because the spring season is coming up it doesn't mean that your winter wardrobe is completely useless, and vice versa.
It's hard to go shopping and not buy everything you love for the current season. If you find yourself looking for a light spring jacket and wind up leaving the story with three different jackets in three different colors, that's most definitely a mistake. Although it is great to have a variety in your closet, let's be honest, you'll most likely wind up favoring one jacket over the other and completely abandon the other two and that's a major problem. So, instead of picking up all three take your time in order to make this difficult decision. Consider which style would be the most versatile with your wardrobe and consider which color would be of more use to you. If you don't feel like making a fashion statement every day don't opt for the bright red buckled leather jacket with fringe; instead, opt for something more subtle like a cool embroidered denim jacket (you can never go wrong with a denim jacket they work wonders).
For me, shoe shopping is the hardest because I want them all. I can never decide between two shoes, that's the worst thing to ever happen to me. Personally, I love a closet with a variety of shoes and if there's one thing you should splurge on I believe it's shoes (or maybe a handbag, clearly I can't decide). You need a daytime flat, a daytime sandal, a daytime heel, a daytime bootie, a pair of sneakers, thigh high boots, nighttime heels, nighttime booties, rain boots, snow boots, all in a subtle color and a bad ass color, and in either a simple or stylish design. When it comes to revamping your shoe closet, first start out slow don't go crazy and buy every type of shoe I mentioned. Start off with something you definitely don't have or have never worn, because you can also revamp what you already own and make those shoes look completely brand new. This winter season I've worn a pair of block-heeled burgundy leather booties every day in every weather condition because I'm obsessed and they are the type of shoes that make a statement with every outfit and I love that!
When it comes to fashion be daring. Buy what you want and wear what you want. But remember to be a smart shopper and be smart when it comes to revamping your closet. Finding your personal sense of style does take time; eventually, you'll get the hang of it and find your uniqueness.
