It's the most wonderful time of the year! No, you're not crazy, the Christmas season has indeed come and gone, but that's not the season I'm referring to. That's right, baseball season is upon us! Pitchers and catchers have reported for Spring Training and the rest of the team will soon follow suit. It's an exciting time for the born and raised baseball fan, as we look towards the season that rapidly approaches. Here's why being a baseball fan is just the best.
1. The laid-back atmosphere.
Baseball is a pretty chill sport. Unlike football or basketball, you don't have to always be on edge. It's easy to carry on a conversation and have quality time with friends while enjoying the game. Being a baseball fan means getting excited and cheering when a great play is made, but not giving yourself a heart attack every few minutes.
2. The weather.
Nothing says summer like a warm night at the baseball game. I don't know about you, but I think getting a tan at a baseball game is much more appealing than freezing your buns off at a football game. Whether you're soaking up the sun or kicking it in the shade, there's no denying that baseball season has the best weather (unless you're a Seattle Mariners fan, then there's a good chance you'll still be bundled up to stay warm in June).
3. The food.
Popcorn, peanuts, hot dogs - oh my! Baseball fans are rewarded for their loyalty with the best food. Whether you're looking to have a full meal or just in the mood for a snack, you'll find what you're looking for at the baseball game. My go-to meal is and will always be a hot dog with a side of garlic fries. They taste so good, it won't matter that your meal cost practically as much as college tuition. So worth it.
4. It's a family friendly sport.
Aside from the few inebriated men yelling unsolicited advice at the umpire, the majority of baseball fans are pretty laid-back. Baseball is a relaxed and somewhat unstructured event, perfect for walking around and taking it all in. Major league games often have activities or themed nights geared towards kids, which makes it a great outing for families. Plus, there's nothing cuter than kids in their tiny hats, eating cotton candy and singing "Take me out to the ball game"!
5. "America's favorite pastime".
Baseball is classic. Need I say more?
6. 162 games.
With so many games in a season, it's likely you can make it to more than one! Between so many games and the Wild Card spot, there's a chance your favorite team could make a comeback even if the beginning of the season starts out rough. Another bonus of so many games? The tickets are often cheaper than going to an NFL game.
7. It's about the experience.
What other sporting event do kids and grown adults alike come prepared to catch a ball and take it home as a souvenir? Or come early to get player autographs as they hang out in the dugout? Where else is there a designated break to stand, stretch, and sing "Take me out to the ball game"? In my humble opinion, baseball provides the best experience for fans.
Baseball isn't just a sport, it's a lifestyle. Many of us were born and raised on warm summer evenings at the ball park. We have old pictures and fond memories of our first major league game, dressed in a baseball tee and holding our dad's giant baseball glove. When Spring Training starts up and Opening Day is on the horizon, it reminds us of the good ol' days, when life was simpler. If you ask me, there's no better feeling than wearing an old baseball cap, eating a hot dog, and watching a baseball game with those you love.
