Everyone knows what Valentine's Day is. Everyone knows what February 14 means. It means something different to everyone, honestly.
However, to society, Valentine’s Day is only about a significant other. For some reason, there's this notion that everyone has that says that if you're alone, you aren't as happy as someone in a relationship. This has become so toxic because it makes anyone who doesn't have a significant other feel like they're doing something wrong or that they can't celebrate Valentine’s Day. Valentine's Day isn't just about romantic love. It's about all kinds of love.
Having a significant other is not the end all, be all. Society makes it seem like romantic relationships are the most important thing in the world, but they're not. Yes they can be nice, but it's not required for a happy life. You can be happy while you're single, trust me. It's okay to be alone on Valentine's Day, and here's why.
Valentine's Day can be about celebrating platonic love. One of my favorite things to do is get cute little gifts or cute little cards for my friends just to remind them how much they are loved. Romantic love is not what makes the world go round. Often, the platonic relationships we make can forge a much stronger bond. There's a lot of pressure in romantic relationships. That pressure is lessened in a platonic relationship.
Valentine's Day can also be for something not everyone thinks about. It can be a day for self love. Self love isn't something that a lot of us have, and it's sad. We should love ourselves and celebrate our differences, and Valentine's Day can be the perfect day for that. It can be a day to treat ourselves, to indulge in some chocolate, to take the time and remind ourselves that we are awesome the way we are. We don't do that enough. It's hard, yes, but it's so rewarding.
Being alone on Valentine's Day isn't embarrassing. It's not stupid. It's not horrible. Own it, and remember there's more than just one type of love. All love is good love. All love should be celebrated.
