Here it is -- the year we’ve all been dreading, yet are so excited for. It’s senior year for some Florida Staters, and we don’t know whether we should be thrilled or depressed by how old we are. It definitely hit me on bid day how irrelevant us seniors would soon become. When we go out, who are we going to know? No one, except our friends. When we’re interested in a dude, the pickings are slim to none, unless we want to cougar-town it.
But then I also got to thinking about the fun I’d have being a senior: the bar crawls, the caravanning to games and living in my sorority house are all things I’m looking forward to this year. When you’re a senior, you are at the top of the charts. And cheers to you fifth-year seniors because you get to live this twice.
But this is the year that you actually have to start facing reality. You can't drink absurd amounts in the real world because a hangover at work the next day could be the death of you. You actually have to start looking for -- long pause -- a job. This is the year where you have to go to that 'career center' place you've been hearing about since you were a freshman. You have to dress up in business attire and attend the career fair in hopes of finding a job opportunity. That is scary. Being a senior is scary. We are less than a year from the real world and do we even feel prepared? Probably not. No one can really prepare for what is out there because the truth is we just get thrown into it.
Our college years are on the homestretch and time is of the essence. Make that bucket list with things you have always wanted to do at FSU and complete it. Do something crazy (but not stupid) and enjoy the time you have left with the people that have changed your life these past few years. Embrace every obstacle with a positive attitude and a solution. Have more fun that your Freshman Summer C session.
The year begins in August and ends in May. So to all my seniors out there who already feel washed up or irrelevant, I have one simple task for you. Make this senior year your year, and make the best of it. And definitely live by the one main rule of seniority: #SYFI.
