Are we all just basic betches?

Basic: A word that meant something totally different until this generation came along. We used to think of it as describing something that was a “necessity” or something in your everyday life, like those basic t-shirts we all call our favorites. Now basic is used to describe something totally different, ourselves. No one knows where this fad even came from, all I know is that we girls have to stick together when trying to avoid becoming a part of it. So here are things that make you a basic bitch (and, more importantly, how to avoid them):

1. Ordering Starbucks coffee and immediately Instagramming it.
Now I love coffee just as much as the next person, but if you are ordering Starbucks with your perfectly manicured hands, Alex and Ani bracelets next to your Michael Kors watch, and Tory Burch sandals on your feet, you are considered basic. How do I avoid this you ask? Maybe go through the drive through Starbucks? The less people that see you being basic the less people that will know it ever happened. 

2. Buying a pair of highwaisted jean shorts.
I’m not gonna lie I have a pair of these myself, us sorority girls just can’t help ourselves. However, try not to wear them every single night you find yourself going out. Maybe switch it up every now and then with a sundress or romper. Sometimes I wear them as regular shorts with a bigger shirt just to hide the fact that they are highwaisted. Not everyone has to know, ladies. I personally try and avoid taking too many pictures with my friends who also chose to wear the same shorts that night, less people notice that way. 

3. Purchasing Fireball.
This is a number one give away. This is every basic girl’s dream. What makes it even better is putting it in your monogrammed Tumblr and sipping on it while wearing your monogrammed necklace. For some reason this drink has gotten the wrap of being “basic”. Is it because of the taste? I think because of the taste, it is known that boys are more inclined to the taste of things such as beer and girls are drawn to the more fruity tasting things. 

4. Wearing Ugg boots.
Okay, I know how hard it is to find a good pair of boots but there are so many more options other than Uggs. Tallahassee doesn’t get too cold either, so we almost have no excuse for wearing multiple pairs of these. We had a snow day last year and I hate to admit it, but used my whole day to walk through the snow to the Starbucks just off campus. Granted, I don’t get to see snow that often, but how basic of me right?! 

Sometimes we get caught up in the times, and while some things can be fun to follow, we do have to remember to be original. If we don’t, we get called terms such as “basic”, but who knows what will come next?
