It’s something we don’t do often, but for just a few minutes, let's forget about the politics. Let’s remember the people who so deeply just want to live in peace. Let’s forget the hate and remember the love, the love that exist in all of their hearts and throughout the whole country.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one rooted in hate and so much history. There are so many people who love the country for all the wonderful things it has to offer. Instead of focusing on the negative, let’s take a few minutes to focus on the positive.
Here are 10 reasons why Israel will always be a place I and so many people call home. And, for those of you leaving soon for winter Birthright trips, here are just a few of the many things you have to look forward to!
Sustainability
Israel is pretty amazing when it comes to being energy efficient. I remember driving by what seemed like miles of solar panels. Here in the US and so many other places, you don’t see an entire country being so environmentally friendly. It’s wonderful to see even a very small country being so friendly to our environment.
Jerusalem
The city is rich with history, and it’s so beautiful. It’s filled with religious cities for so many different religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity!
Zefat
Zefat is probably my favorite city in Israel! It’s filled with history and beautiful art. When I visited, I got the most beautiful handmade ring and a beautiful necklace. Aside from the beautiful jewelry, the city is all around incredible!
Dead Sea
Who doesn’t like floating in the Dead Sea? Just make sure you don’t accidentally swallow any water and you haven’t shaved in at least a day; neither is a fun time.
Also, the mud from the Dead Sea is great for your skin! That is always a plus.
The Shuk
The Shuk is where I fell in love with Israel. We were there on Friday afternoon; everyone was dancing and singing in the streets. It was loud and joyous. It was snowing, and I remember being freezing, but the energy was incredible and it made me forget about the weather.
Sea of Galilee
When I was there in January, we stayed on a Kibbutz on the shores of the Kinneret. It was a gorgeous view and an experience I’ll never forget.
Falafel
I know we have falafel in the US, but there’s something special about falafel in Israel. Falafel stands are like the McDonalds of Israel. They are everywhere, and they’re quick.
Israeli Boys
I don’t think this list would be complete without this one. We love Israeli boys! I think just about every Jewish girl is told by at least one person before she goes on Birthright, make sure she doesn’t fall in love some Israeli boy and forget to come home.
The People
Maybe it’s just something about growing up with a close family friend that’s Israeli, but I love the people! They say what they want, and they aren’t afraid to do so.
And their driving -- I also appreciate their driving. While I was in Israel, we passed a person parked half on the sidewalk. Again, they do what they want, and I love it so much.
Landscape
Israel is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. From the Mediterranean Sea to the Golan Heights to the Negev and everything in between; it’s all beautiful and a place I wish I never had to leave.
