Why I Love Being Arabic

"Lebanon." "Where's that?"

It's pretty obvious with a name like mine that I'm not just an American. My name is a conversation starter, and although I follow it with, "I'm from Lebanon. It's on the coast of the Mediterranean," and get more blank stares than not, it's still pretty great people are interested in things they aren't familiar with. You just can't get the same reaction with generic names!

Growing up with a heritage that is foreign to the US has it's ups and downs for sure. As a kid, I was regarded as a pretty strange child, and got laughed at or sometimes even bullied, because I didn't understand some jokes or didn't find others as funny as most did. I grew up with strict and religious parents who wanted the best for me, who didn't want me to grow up unsuccessfully. It wasn't until I graduated from high school that I began to embrace my traditions and heritage and enjoy myself around those who have similar values.

When I was younger, I definitely ate more than I should have. Literally ask anyone that's had it, Arabic food is the bomb. Mediterranean grills, sandwiches, hummus, shawarma, kebobs, tabouli...the list goes on and on. I confess I let food get the best of me growing up (hence the constant gym time) and grew up fairly overweight. My mom didn't do it on purpose of course, but we were an extensive family and I had an extensive appetite. I'm getting hungry just writing about it. I blame the pita bread.

Arabic parties are the definition of wild, and become even crazier with the addition of alcohol in the equation. Around the time a dabke (traditional arabic dance) breaks out is the highlight of any night. Music is blaring, the alcohol is pumping and everyone is just having a badass time dancing to upbeat Arabic music. To be completely honest, you wouldn't need to understand the music to be hyped up. It's that legit.

Last but not least, not living in a country you love. Sitting at my desk, I have fantasized countless times about the gorgeous weather around this time of year there, the candy, ice cream and the crazy fun car rides to and from the beach every night with my family. Lebanese nightlife was exciting and invigorating and not similar at all to the nightlife I've had here.

Having a country that's always lingering in the back of my head is a blessing and just daydreaming about the clear blue beach water takes me away.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
