Who Are You?

The journey of finding yourself

Who Are You?

Time is a scarce resource for all people, and it only gets scarcer as we get older, so the most crucial thing to do while you are young is to find yourself. Finding yourself goes beyond the meaning of knowing what you like and don’t like, but it also allows us to develop as a person and gain a new sense of independence. Recently in life, I have went through a situation that was tough for me, but I was able to learn something really valuable-- I needed to find myself as a person in order to be the best me that I can be.

This new discovery has enabled me to gain not only a new sense of independence, but also a new sense of self-confidence. This journey has definitely made my life more positive, and I have achieved much more than I could’ve ever imagined, but be patient. This endeavor does take time. Finding yourself is not something that happens over night. Depending on the person it can take weeks, months, or even years to figure out exactly who you are, but here are a few steps that got me closer to my goal:

1. Distinguish your goals/values from the goals/values of others.

-It's very easy to go through life based on the opinions and suggestion of others, but you'll never technically make your own decisions if you don't remove these external voices. So sit down by yourself and write down all goals/values of YOURS. You'd be amazed to see how your future goals may be different from what you once thought!

2. Have trust in yourself!

- Confidence is the key to finding yourself. You need to have self worth in order to believe in yourself and understand what you really want in your life. Trust your decision making techniques, no matter how many mistakes you make -- in order to learn you must fail.

3. Get comfortable with being alone.

-Distance yourself from the noise and the pressure. Solitude is a necessity for everyone, so don't think loneliness is bad. This is when you self-talk, and contemplate your life and the direction you want it to go. The more comfortable you become with yourself and being alone, the more independent and strong you will feel!

4. Find your passion

-In your 20's you're always looking either for a romantic interest, a new friend, a new job, etc., and this takes away from you allowing yourself to find a hobby or talent. This is very important for life, as everyone needs something that relieves their stress, and makes them feel good. What other time to figure that out than now, so get moving!

5. Put yourself first!

-You can't please everyone, and the only person that needs to be happy at all times is you! Let go of the concept that you can possibly please everyone you come across, and accept the fact that there will always be people that will look down upon you no matter what. Start by accepting yourself and the people that matter the most in your life will accept you too!

Don’t ever feel discouraged during this journey because, trust me, the end result is totally worth it! Everything else will fall into place and work out as its supposed to, but for now be patient and enjoy the ride!!!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
