Every spring, there is one thing that everyone knows all sports fans get excited for. You already know what I'm talking about. Yes, it's March Madness! It always seems like it takes forever to get here, but you know that you'll enjoy it because whether you like basketball or not, you know it's awesome. What makes it so fun is the competition, the upsets that you honestly do want to see happen, and the little victories and prizes you get for your chosen teams going all the way. For this year, Warren Buffet was offering 100k to the person who goes the furthest in getting the Sweet Sixteen teams correctly. In my own family, the person with the most wins total in our point system gets to pick dinner. Not quite 100k, but there's still that little feeling of pride when you're a winner. And, in case you were wondering, I am actually the winner this year before the tournament is even over. The last time my family checked, I was in first with a 12-point lead ahead of my dad and I actually had Oregon in the Final Four. If Kentucky had won against UNC I would've had two teams left.
Now, this is just my opinion, but college basketball is WAY more fun to watch than NBA, and while the Super Bowl is enjoyable, I would say the same thing about college football. There's something about the fact that these are the players that are finding out if they will even go professional. Watching them become MVPs and the all-around best players in the league is just so cool. You get to see the development of these players. In the professional leagues, you're watching everyone who was good enough and it can be the same players forever. College players have a limit obviously; its turn pro while in college, or finish college then go pro if you can. Don't get me wrong, I would still have fun at an NBA or NFL game, but college games are just so much more fun with the atmosphere, the competition, and the overall experience. And, watching college is a way to let you cheer as an alumnus. I'm pretty sure you can only act that excited for the professional teams if you've actually played on them or own them.
Looking at this year's March Madness rounds, we have seen some GOOD games. For example, Middle Tennessee, one I have never even heard of, won against Minnesota, Xavier beat Arizona, and Rhode Island defeated Creighton. Of course, there's more, I was just the most shocked by those in the beginning of the tournament. Teams go through such a journey in this tournament, whether they win or lose, no matter the fact that it's single-elimination. Every team has their story like South Carolina has reached the Final Four this year for the first time in their school's history; that's pretty amazing. And while Duke, Kentucky, and UNC always do well in the tournament, you have to give them the credit they deserve. So when you watch these last few games, think about this: while your teams may have lost early or made it far, these teams have had a much more extensive journey than we can imagine.
