There has been widespread over-diagnosis of the personality disorder known as basic betch. Today I will give you the  skillz to properly diagnose basic betch disorder. First, you must understand the difference between liking popular things and being, "OMG totes obsessed!" 

Example: there is absolutely nothing wrong with liking PSL's (pumpkin spice lattes). However, Instagramming a picture of your fave Sbux drink twice a week is, say it with me -- basic. If you actually like PSL's, you will be too busy drinking it to Instagram. Now, before you go around mentally diagnosing people with "the basics," use this evaluation guide to decide whether they are basic or healthy. 

1. She is wearing uggs. Okay, this might be a touchy subject, but first check the weather. Is it below 30 degrees?  Is she probably walking to class? Is she at least not wearing them with shorts? Evaluate. 

2. She is eating a bagel. Is it the morning? Is she eating the bagel or just talking about how much she luhvs bagels? Did she Instagram, Tweet, or SnapChat about the bagel?Evaluate.  

3. She is watching The Notebook. Is it a Sunday afternoon? Is she mildly hungover? Is she eating ice cream? Is she alone? Is she crying? Wait, this is probably just me...  

4. She wears yoga pants. Does she exclusively wear pink Victoria's Secret yoga pants? Does she wear them with Uggs? Does she wear them for everything besides yoga? Evaluate.  

5. She wears flower headbands. Is she at a summer concert? Is she claiming to be a flower child? Does she wish that she was born in another time? Evaluate.  

6. She loves Forever 21. Does she love it more than #lyfe? Did she mention that she bought "literally everything?"   Evaluate.

7. She loves Beyonce. Wait. Have you ever seen Queen B? Who are you to judge? Who doesn't love Beyonce? Okay, sorry... What I mean is, evaluate.    

Moral of the story: While it is easy to roll your eyes at those who love romantic comedies and iced-skinny-carmel-macchiatos, that person might actually enjoy those things and it is not our place to judge. We probably like those things, too, even if we avoid documenting our third trip to Starbucks this week. Keep in mind, basic things are "basic" because so many people like them.
