From playing house and dress up or pretending that your doll was dating Ken, Barbies have taught many girls about growing up through role-play and imagination. I was obsessed with Barbies as a child, and I still think they are fabulous. I wanted to be just like my Barbie, living in her Barbie dream house, wearing fancy clothes and hanging out with that hot Ken doll.
I did notice, however, that my Barbies were always bleach blonde, skinny and had long legs. I often aspired to look like them as a child, which if you look at her proportions is impossible.
The problem was that many times my friends would come over to play, of many different shapes and skin tones, and couldn’t find a Barbie that had similar features. This made it difficult to role-play because they couldn’t relate. How were we supposed to look like our dolls?
Barbie has now fixed this problem with an epic new set of dolls. They have introduced curvy, petite and tall. The dolls will also come in a variety of skin tones and hair colors. Finally, Barbies will be relatable to young girls because they will be able to say, “Hey, that doll looks like my mom!” This is an important concept because girls will not only relate to the dolls, but they can relate them to women in many different roles in their lives; whether this be mother, teacher, veterinarian or doctor. They can aspire to be just like these “real life” women and play with their dolls the same way.
These dolls will be available March 1, and will come in 33 news shapes and sizes. No longer will all of the dolls look cookie cutter, they will be unique like real women. According to the Barbie website, this also includes some of the dolls having flat feet instead of pointy ones meant to fit into high heels.
“We have to let girls know that it doesn’t matter which shape you come in anything is possible,” said Tania Missad, director consumer insights at Barbie.

Their website states, “This is just the beginning. From offering products that feature more empowering and imaginative roles to partnering with best in class role models, we believe in girls and their limitless potential. #YouCanBeAnything”
At the age of 22 I may even go out and buy one of these new Barbies because it is a huge step for the company and girls’ self-images everywhere. Goodbye to the days of trying to be cookie cutter, hello to embracing uniqueness.
