Summer, why did it have to end this way? Oh well.. Time to hit the books again. I dedicate this article to all students, regardless of age. Parents too, thank you for all your sacrifices.
Ever see the kid holding onto their mom for dear life on the first day of school, with tears streaming down their face? Oh yeah, that was me. Up until third grade.. who am I kidding? Probably longer than that. I fought off the nerve induced nausea for many years, and was called a "weird cry baby" once or twice. Man, kids can be cruel. As I got older, I still didn't care for school, but I got through it! I want to offer some words of encouragement/tips for anyone struggling with school- related anxiety. You are definitely not alone!
1. An education is a blessing. If you're under the age of 18, take advantage of not having to pay an insane amount of money to attend school. Order hot lunch, treasure picture day, make the most out of recess, ask questions, and most importantly be kind to your classmates!
2. Do not change yourself in order to fit in. This sounds so cliche but you need to hear it. Never conform to society's expectations, unless that is what you really want to be. Remember who you belong to, God instilled purpose in your beating heart.
3.Talk about your worries with a trusted friend, teacher, or parent. They can help calm your nerves, and maybe help you realize that the uneasy feelings will eventually pass.
4. When it comes to making friends and maintaining them, you need to understand quality over quantity. I keep in contact with 5 or 6 childhood friends, that is it.
5. If you are a victim of bullying, do not sit in silence. Find help, and know your worth. It gets better, some people are very insecure and feel better by bringing others down. Don't ever be like that.
6. Do your best, never allow grade stress to make you sick. I remember getting a C in art in 5th grade (so harsh). I felt so defeated, but looking back I now laugh about it. I am still here and doing very well in my academics (shout out 5th grade teacher). My art is probably B worthy by now in case you were wondering.
7. If all else fails, consider homeschooling. I used Keystone National High School (online), and loved it. Do not pay attention to the homeschool stereotypes, it is not weird and you can still maintain your social abilities.
I go back to college in a few short days, and for once in my life the jitters are nowhere to be found. I wish everyone a blessed year, filled with knowledge, health and friendship!
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7
