It's all too easy for us Americans to generalize Australia as the "Land Down Under," the home of Vegemite, kangaroos, and "Finding Nemo." But little did you probably know: some of the best music of today is coming out Australia. From the neo-psychedelic movement that came with the rise of Tame Impala to more singer-songwriter type music, the Aussies sure know what they're doing. Here are some bands from Australia you should check out (drink a few "tinnies" while you're at it, too).
Sunbeam Sound Machine
These guys sound as if the Beach Boys and Tame Impala somehow fused together to create a new, trippy band. Dreamy guitar and sound effects take your mind to a different place. As lead singer Nick Sowersby put, "I just like songs to have an atmosphere to it and sounds like you’re sitting inside when you listen to it. Especially on headphones…I love songs that have that effect, or swimming around your head." Their music videos, too, have that trippy effect.
Good Morning
Hailing from Melbourne, this band is perfect for a relaxing Sunday morning—perhaps in living up to the band's name. It's honestly just what you think it is: two dudes making chill music. They're a small band right now, but you can support them and buy their music on their Bandcamp here.
The John Steel Singers
Your newest dance music: "Weekend Lover" by the John Steel Singers (pictured in the headline). These guys, named after a toy horse that one of the band members owns, make some seriously underrated music. Whether it's catchy riffs or unique lyrics, this band is sure to please. Also, their newest music video involves PUPPIES! Who can resist that?
Courtney Barnett
Honestly, if you pay attention to the indie music scene at all, then Courtney Barnett should not be a new name. Although she only has a few EPs and one album under her belt, she has attained critical acclaim from fans all over the world. Her album "Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit" has made it to several "Best of 2015" lists. It's no wonder: her catchy riffs and her humorous lyrics are just so great.
Hungry Kids of Hungary/Rolls Bayce
Back in high school, one of my best friends introduced me to this band. I'm still not sure how we stumbled upon this band, but these guys make some of the catchiest songs out there. I remember being instantly hooked to "Scattered Diamonds," "Wristwatch," and "Let You Down." Unfortunately, Hungry Kids have since broken up, but their lead singer is in a new band called Rolls Bayce; the other members have pursued their own bands as well, including the punk-ish Born Joy Dead. You can still listen to Hungry Kids on Spotify, as well as check out Rolls Bayce's newest single, "Lost" here.
