I am just one of many basketball fans at UC Davis, and whenever the new season begins, it definitely is an exciting time. It does not matter which season either. Of course, plan A for most people is following the NBA action and supporting their favorite team in that league, but you cannot forget about college basketball. There are the perennial college basketball forces such as Duke, North Carolina, and Kentucky to name a few, but then you have UC Davis. The UC Davis basketball team were regular season champions in the Big West and making an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament, losing to Stanford in the first round. Not bad for the Aggies.
But this article is going to be a little different. Being a third-year student at UC Davis has given me the pleasure of interacting with, befriending, and getting to know so many different students. Their majors, personalities, talents, and goals vary even more than California’s weather; they are all unique and interesting individuals with the determination and ability to take on challenges with great results. This same is true for the members of the UC Davis men’s basketball team. In the spirit of that, I asked two of them a few questions so that the UC Davis community and my reading audience can get to know them aside from their basketball abilities.
The six questions I asked were:
1. What is your favorite sport besides basketball and why?
2. What is your favorite animal that resides in Davis?
3. What is your favorite place to go on campus for some down time?
4. What song would you choose to have as your theme song?
5. Which NBA star past or present would you either most compared your game to or you most aspire to play like?
6. Which fictional character are you most like? Explain
So without further ado, here are the answers from senior forward Josh Fox and junior guard Darius Graham.
Josh Fox 1. “I enjoy watching football because of the physicality and the athleticism the players possess is amazing.” 2. “My favorite Davis animal has to be a squirrel. They are not afraid of people on campus and they are pretty athletic so it is fun to watch them jump from tree to tree.” 3. “I enjoy sitting in the quad to listen to music and to people watch.” 4. “My theme song would be Smack That by Akon ft Eminem. It’s just a fun, silly song and I love it.” 5. “I really mold my game to Scottie Pippen, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler. They are great defensive and offensive players.” 6. “I would have to say Scooby-Doo in the way that he is just fun loving and he loves to eat. I love food and eating.” Darius Graham |
1) “I would have to say probably football. ‘How ‘bout them Cowboys?’".
2) “The other day I saw some llamas by the animal center and it was the first one I have seen in real life so it was pretty cool. So I would have to say that was my favorite.”
3) “If it's not the locker room I would probably say the MU/quad. If I'm ever between practice and class and have some time to relax I love to go there and get a burrito and some lemonade and chill for a minute.”
4) “Man it really depends on the mood that I am in really. But I would probably say "Love Yourz" by J Cole. It really puts into frame that there is no such thing as a life that’s better than yours.”
5) “I have always loved the tenacity and passion that Bobby Jackson played with especially in Sacramento for my hometown team the Kings.”
6) “I would say between Riley Freeman and Huey Freeman in the show "The Boondocks." They are complete opposites in the show, but I feel like I am a happy medium of loving to have fun but also being conscious of my surroundings.”
Well, there you have it. I enjoyed having a chance to asks Darius and Josh these types of questions because it’s important to take the time to step back from constantly moving back and forth from the scheduled aspects of life. Behind each student or student athlete, there’s so many layers to our personality that makes us who we are, and I hope this encourages the readers to appreciate those smaller details about themselves and their friends. Of course, be sure to come support the men’s basketball team and all of our athletic teams here at UC Davis. You can find the schedule at this website, which is also the source of the pictures I used in this article:
